    temperatures, desert-like precipitation, poor
    nutrients and short growing seasons.

  • Northern Hemisphere
  • Encircles the North Pole and extends South to the
    Coniferous Forest of the Taiga
  • Far North of Greenland, Alaska, Canada, Europe,
    Russia.
  • Covers a fifth of the worlds surface.
  • The Tundra is divided into two types
  • Alpine
  • Arctic

  • Vegetation is mostly shrubs, mosses, lichens, and
    grasses.
  • No trees except for these willows that grow as
    low carpets.
  • Only 1700 species.
  • Also 48 species of land animals and few insects.
  • Great place for migratory birds.

  • Average temperature in Summer is 37F to 60F.
  • Winter temperature can drop to -94F.
  • Extremely windy.
  • There is 6-10 inches precipitation, which is
    desert like.
