Title: SLOVAK TRADITIONS

1
SLOVAK TRADITIONS
2
Slovakia is a little big country with a lot of
traditions. It seems that in our country there
are not so many traditions but I would like to
show you that the opposite is true.
3
What is traditional in Slovakia???
  • Slovakia is a country with 5.5 mil. inhabitants
  • It has only 49 000 square km but many kinds of
people live there. We are a colourful nation
with a lot of traditions from the past.
Traditional works were handworks, for men
outside, for women inside... Traditional food
traded mainly in poor families is bread with salt
    and potatoes.
  • Other traditions are Slovak holidays...

4
New Year and Faiangy
  • New Year is the first holiday in the year, and it
is like in other countries... But from Epiphany,
what means from 6th January to the beginning of
the Easter period there is holiday called
    Faiangy.
  • This holiday is traded like a holiday of the time
between winter and spring...People all over the
country eat, drink and enjoy life, they have
fun, and make shindigs, but the most
characteristic is organising balls in this
    period.

5
Easter
  • This feast is known all over the world, but in
Slovakia there are some differences. The most
interesting is Easter Monday- this day young
boys and men whip and water girls with cold
water or parfum, and the girls and women give
them presents, for example colourful eggs ...
  • We have an old custom of making Easter eggs
    which are painted.
  • The typical Easter meal is smoked ham, sausages,
    eggs, cakes and potato salad.

6
Morena
  • It is and old tradition to make a doll called
Morena in spring and throw it into water, but it
is usually only in small villages. Morena
symbolises the death of winter and coming spring.

7
Labour Day-1 May and Saint John night
  • In the past boys used to decorate a tree with
    colourful streamers which symbolised life.
  • this night superstitious people make a fire in
front of their houses to protect them from bad
    ghosts...

8
All Saints Day- 1th November
9
Saint Nicolaus Day- Mikulá
  • Very nice and popular feast for children is Saint
Nicolaus Day on 6th December. On this day
children put their shoes on the window. They get
sweets, fruits or small toys into their shoes.
Adults dress a mask of St. Nicolaus, devil and
    angel.

10
Christmas
  • At Christmas we send Christmas cards, we buy and
decorate a Christmas tree. On Christmas Eve many
people go to church. We open the gifts on
Christmas Eve after the dinner! Sauerkraut and
fried carp with potato salad are traditional
meals. There are also old traditions connected
with Christmas for example a coin is given
under the table to bring a lot of money next
    year.

11
The last Slovak tradition, which I have to
mention are folk dances...
  • So these were Slovak traditions... Hopefully, you
know now more about Slovakia )
