Title: Freezing to death in the blazing sun'

1
Freezing to death in the blazing sun.
  • Ringed seals are being threatened by climate
change in Canada, Alaska and Greenland. As snow
and ice melts faster seal pups are in danger.
They depend on their mother, the ice and snow.
  • If they dont have these things, the population
and reproduction of these marine mammals will
become endangered.Climate change can also affect
the seals habitat. They live in marine waters of
northern hemispheres and occasional fresh water
lakes. They spend most of their life on the ice
    as they breed and grow.

2
Nattiq
  • Mainly their food source is arctic cod. They also
feed on amiphods, and plank tonic crustaceans.
  • The females breed at 3-7 years old, males at 5-7.
  • Females usually give birth between March and
April in snow caves above their breeding holes.
Seal Pups are small, they weigh about 4-5 kg.

3
How can we protect ringed seals?
  • I believe that everyone can help protect the
ringed seals by reducing greenhouse gases.
  • We can also protect the ringed seals by signing
an agreement or petition on the conservation of
seals and their homes. We can all take action
towards being efficient for the protection of
ringed seals so that Inuit Knowledge and Heritage
    can live.
  • Another way to protect ringed seals is to cut
hunting on ringed seals for few years or set tags
and hunting regulations for seal hunters. Im
going to try to be more efficient at home, by
using less energy, car pooling, and using cold
    water for laundry.
  • Every marine mammal needs protection before its
    too late.

4
Inuit Culture
  • Ringed seals are considered as a important food
source of Inuit. It benefits to all seasons, it
can be caught every spring, summer, fall and
winter. The impact of climate change on ringed
seals is going to affect Inuit in many ways. It
is a very important part of the diet of Inuit,
it provides protein and nutrition, warmth,
fashion and knowledge towards Inuit tradition.
Inuit uses the seal skin for boots, mitts,
    parkas, and suits.

5
How can they adapt to the changes?
  • Scientists now believe that the sea ice could
melt approximately 70 years time. Time is going
    to fly by.
  • If the ringed seals reproduction is falling then
soon some arctic animals will also be going down.
But if the ringed seal would be able to adapt to
a dryer land to nurse their pups, I think it can
be a good start. I believe they can adapt to an
    ice free environment.

Everything comes to and end
  • This project is about ringed seals and how can we
    help them.
  • I put the words I thought would be good enough
for ringed seals, just so you know Nattiq is a
    Inuktitut word for ringed seal.
  • I hope that the ringed seals could live on for
centuries. This is the end of my project.
