Ollie and Orpha
River Otters
Near the pond on the Hendersons farm lived
afamily of otters. Ollie and Orpha were the
youngestmembers of the den. Usually these two
wereallowed to spend the day playing, but today
was aspecial day and Mother Otter told Ollie and
Orphanot to go near the water. Friends were
visiting, andit was important to Mother that
everything stayedneat and tidy. Dont get
dirty, she commanded. Of course we
wont, said Orpha as she lookedat Ollie.
Ollie smiled, and Orpha knew that he wascreating
a plan to find a way to head to the mudslidethey
had just discovers. Orpha wondered what she
should tell Mother
River otters are fascinating little
creatures. Otters, wearing their brown fur
coats, love any kind of water. They can be found
near riverbanks, by ponds, and in lakes. Their
fur keeps them warm even when the water is very
cold. Otters are wonderful swimmers. They dive,
float, and glide through the water. This is easy
for them because they have long bodies and big
back feet. Otters survive by eating fish, frogs,
and crayfish. Otters play. Some of their
favorite games are hide-n-seek and sliding down
muddy hillsides. They usually live in a den with
other otters, so they always have someone to play
with. Otters are definitely fun to watch.
