Title: Molluska Mollusks

1
Molluska- Mollusks
  • Of all the invertebrates, mollusks probably have
the widest range of body forms.
  • Examples would be Clams, Oysters, Scallops,
    snails, Octopus and Squid.

2
Basic Anatomical Characteristics
  • 1. All have bilateral symmetry.
  • 2. Foot used for transportation, can also be
adapted for crawling, digging or catching prey.
  • 3. Mantle Produces out shell
  • 4. Gills mollusks found in water breathe
through gills similar to those of fish.

3
3 Basic Types of Mollusks
  • Gastropods Stomach Foot
  • 1. Examples would be snails and slugs
  • 2. These are the most numerous of all the
    mollusks.
  • 3. They have a single shell or none at all.
  • 4. Found on land in water (salt and fresh).
  • 5. They are herbivores, scavengers or
    carnivores.
  • 6. They feed on decaying matter, whether plant
    or animal.
  • 7. They have radula. (Tiny teeth located in the
mouth, used for scraping up food particles.

4
Bivalves 2 shells
  • 1. 2 shells held together by a hinge or strong
  • muscle.
  • 2. Examples would be clams, oysters, scallops
  • and mussels.
  • 3. No radula
  • 4. Filter feeders they strain their food
    through
  • their gills or capture food as they
    breathe
  • 5. Found only in water (fresh and salt).
  • 6. Move very slowly using a muscular foot
  • 7. Clams move around where oysters stay put.
  • 8. They form pearls.

5
Cephalopods Brain Foot
  • 1. These are mollusks with tentacles.
  • 2. Examples would be octopus, cuttlefish,
    nautilus and
  • squid.
  • 3. Feed with the use of tentacles that formed
    around
  • their mouths (some up to 5 meters
    long).
  • 4. Nautiluses have an external shell, squid and
    cuttlefish
  • have an internal shell
  • 5. They have large eyes for excellent night
    (dark) vision.
  • 6. Radula tiny teeth located in the mouth,
    used for
  • scraping up food particles.
  • 7. They all have a complex nervous system
    including
  • an extremely large brain making them
    highly intelligent.
