• Son of Zeus and Danae
• Sets out to kill Medusa and bring back her head
• Accidentally kills his grandfather by hitting him
  with a stray discus

King Acrisius

• Father of Danae
• Is told that he is going to be killed by his
  future grandson, Perseus
• Knowing his grandsons life was a danger to his
  own, he had him and Danae put into a chest and
  taken out to sea

Danae

• Daughter of Acrisius
• Mother of Perseus
• Refused to marry Polydectes

Dictys

• A kind and humble fisherman
• Let Danae and Perseus stay with him after
  Acrisius abandoned them

Polydectes

• Brother of Dictys
• Cruel and ruthless man
• Fell in love with Danae, but didnt want her son,
  Perseus
• So he told Perseus to go off, kill Medusa and
  bring back her head, knowing that it was nearly
  impossible

Hermes and Athena

• They both helped in protecting Perseus when he
  went to kill Medusa
• Hermes gave Perseus his sword to kill Medusa
• Athena gave Perseus her shield (Perseus was to
  use it as a mirror when killing Medusa.)

Gorgons

• Fearsome monsters -snaky hair
  -wings -golden
  scales
• Known far and wide for deadly power
• Whoever looked at them turned to stone

Medusa

• One of the 3 Gorgons the only one that was not
  immortal
• No man unaided could kill her
• Killed by Perseus

The Gray Women

• Knew where nymphs lived helped Perseus
• Shared one eye
• Shape of swans, but their heads were human
• Under their wings they had arms and hands

Nymphs of the North

• They had what Perseus needed to kill Medusa
• When Perseus comes to them, they give him
• -winged sandals
• -a magic wallet (would always become the right
  size for whatever had to be carried)
• -a cap (made the wearer invisible)

Andromeda

• Perseus fell in love with her the instant he saw
  her
• She was offered up, and chained to a rocky ledge
  waiting for the monster to come to her
• Perseus waited with her and saved her from the
  monster, by cutting its head off
