Assignment 1
  • (2 points)
  • Take a moment to reflect on your first week in
the clinic. Take two issues, aspects, or
situations that surprised you, were unexpected,
or made you feel uncomfortable. Write about
these issues in a one to two page paper. Make
sure that your paper is either typed or printed
but DO NOT IDENTIFY YOURSELF. I will collect the
papers at the beginning of the next class.

Assignment 2
  • (4 points)- The goal of this exercise is to
enable you to become more skilled at discussing
    patient diagnosis with different audiences.
  • Consider one patient who you are working with or
observing in the clinic. You have been asked by
a registered nurse who is working with your
patient for a detailed description of the pts
diagnosis (it has been okayed by the pt). Please
choose a diagnosis that we had discussed in any
previous PTA Courses. Write in medical
terminology how you would define the patients
diagnosis to the nurse. This task should be no
longer than one page in length. Make sure that
you use accepted medical terminology and medical
    abbreviations in your discussion.
  • Your patients wife has now asked you to do the
same. Please now write how you would describe
the same diagnosis but now your description needs
to be in lay terminology (not medical
terminology). Please keep your discussion no
longer than one page in length.

Assignment 3
  • (4 points) The goal of this exercise is to
enable you to become more skilled at discussing
    PT Interventions with different audiences.
  • Continuing with the same patient as the previous
assignment now discus the PT Interventions..
Again, this needs to be discussed with each of
    the two different audiences
  • A registered nurse
  • A family member of the patient
  • The submission should be no longer than one page
    in length.

Assignment 4
  • (20 points) The goal of this exercise is to
continue to improve your skills in communication
and to facilitate an ease of transition when
talking to the medical community and the lay
public. It is also meant to provide some self
    reflection.
  • Continue with the same patient and make all
necessary corrections as noted on your paper. Now
    answer to the following
  • Which method of communication was easier for you
    and why?
  •
  • Why is it important to be able to make this
    transition?
  • How could you help someone else to make the
transition more easily and to feel more
comfortable with both methods of communication?
  •
  • What would you do differently if this were an

Student Writing Sample
  • Being limited by my lack of patience, as well
as by calculators computing power, I decided to
make the computer do my job. I wrote a Java
    program
  • It was not clear for me though when sevens
took over. In order to figure it out, I modified
my program yet again to create Excel-friendly
comma separated data output for power values from
0 to 10000. Using Excel I generated the following
    graph

First Digit Phenomenon (2)

of the population figures of the worlds
countries, or (b) the first digits of the numbers
representing the area of the worlds countries.

How to Keep a Critical Thinking Journal
  • 1. One of the main objectives of this
course is to help you become a more perceptive
and critical reader. By the end of the course,
you should be able to read a passage from a text
and ask yourself a number of questions about that
passage that will help you better understand the
complexities of the text as a whole. One of the
best ways to improve your ability to read with
intelligence and understanding is to reflect in
writing about what youve read. By writing about
your reactions to reading assignment for the
course, you will get in the habit of thinking
critically about the text. In addition to
helping you gain a better understanding of these
works, keeping a journal will help prepare you
for the courses essay assignments and exams.
  • 2. Journal assignments are due in class
once in almost every week. See the syllabus for
a detailed list of dues dates. For each journal
entry, you are to write one to two pages
(approximately 500-600 words, though you are free
to write more) in which you respond to the
reading assignment for that class. In some cases
(especially at the beginning of the semester), I
will hand out a specific question that you should
answer. As the semester progresses, you will
have the freedom to write your journal entries
about any aspect of the text that you find
    interesting or confusing.

21
How to Keep a Critical Thinking Journal
  • 3. Journal entries must be typed
    (double-spaced, one-inch margins). Please
include the following information at the top of
your pageYour name, LIB200, the date, journal
  • 4. In most cases, class will begin with a
discussion of what youve written in your
journals. Please be prepared to share what
youve written and what youve thought about the
reading with the rest of the class.
  • 5. Journals will be collected on the date
they are due and returned to you within one or
    two classes.
  • 6. Individual journal entries will not be
graded. However, I will make brief comments on
them to let you know if you are making the best
use of this important aspect of the course. Keep
in mind that putting in the effort to keep a
thoughtful journal will help prepare you to
perform well on the essay assignments.
  • 7. At two points during the semester, you
will submit all of your journals in a folder. At
this time, you will write a two-page statement in
which you reflect on what you have learned by
keeping the journal. You will receive more
detailed information about this aspect of the
journals at a later date. You will receive grades
on these two journal portfolios that will be
included in your overall grade for the course.

Journal Assignment 3, Due March Journal
Assignment 3 Night (47-120)
  • As with all of your journals, you should write
1-2 pages (typed) in response to the question
below. Please follow the format described in the
    handout about keeping your journal.
  •
  • Please write your journal in response to the
following question After arriving at the
    Buchenwald concentration camp, Elie is
temporarily separated from his father. He then
becomes ashamed of himself for secretly hoping he
will not find him (106). Why does the idea of
abandoning his father occur to Elie? Does Elies
relationship with his father help him survive, or
is it a burden that threatens his survival?
  •
  • Study Questions Please think about these
questions as you read, but you are not required
to write about these questions. We will discuss
some of these issues in class.
  •

23
Journal Assignment 3 Night Study Questions

from Warsaw (62) affect Elie so strongly even
though he has witnessed the deaths of so many

Midterm Journal Reflection 1
  • General Guidelines
  • As you know, the purpose of your journal entries
is to improve your ability to think critically
about the texts you have been reading in the
course. In order to think critically about what
    you read, you should
  • formulate questions that will lead you to a more
thorough understanding of the complexities of the
    text
  • consider the issues raised about genocide by the
    text from many different perspectives
  • evaluate the actions and thoughts of the
characters and/or the views of the narrator
  • analyze the way in which the author has presented
the story so as to develop a deeper understanding
    of genocide
  • support your opinions about the text with
    specific textual evidence
  • communicate your questions about and
    understanding of genocide effectively through
    writing, speaking, and discussing

25
Midterm Journal Reflection 2
  • Specific Assignment For your midterm
    reflection, you should
  • Read all of your journal entries (1-5).
  • Write a 1-2 page (minimum 400 words) statement
    (typed) in which you
  • explain how your ability to think critically
about the texts has developed since the beginning
    of the semester
  • explain what you have learned about genocide from
the texts through your journal entries
  • evaluate your journals that is, explain whether
you think you are using the journals in a way
that helps develop your understanding of the
complex causes and effects of genocide
  • offer suggestions for how you might improve your
ability to read with greater understanding
  • make any other comments about your journals that
    you think are relevant.
  • Collect your 5 journal entries (with my comments
on them) along with your 1-2 page statement in a
folder and submit the entire folder on the due
    date.
