26Is Forensics A Hot Science Topic? Take
This Week's NSTA Express Poll and Let Us Know.
Thanks to the growing popularity of CSI and
other forensic-based TV programs, science
teachers across the country have begun using
forensics to ignite student interest in science
and help students learn important concepts of
science. NSTA wants to know how widespread these
activities have become. If you're a middle or
high school science educator, take this
week'sNSTA Express Poll and tell us.

31Sunshine State Standards Review 2005
32Sunshine State Standards Review 2005
- In 2001, the Department conducted the Sunshine
State Standards Mid-Course Review, through the
Suncoast Area Center for Education Enhancement at
the University of South Florida. - This provides preliminary information to help
guide the revision of the SSS. - The study involved interviewing individuals and
focus groups in selected districts and - subcontracting with the national Council for
Basic Education to review and evaluate the
standards. - Both facets produced generally favorable
findings, but there were suggestions for
improvement.
33Sunshine State Standards Review 2005
- The Florida Department of Education is in the
process of planning for a review of the Sunshine
State Standards beginning in 2005. - The Department will make decisions by the end of
2004, with stakeholder input, about the
parameters of the review in terms - of standards organization, wording changes,
- number of benchmarks,
- specificity of benchmarks,
- coverage vs. depth,
- developmental appropriateness,
- embedding general process standards in subject
standards, and implementation tools.
34Sunshine State Standards Review 2005
- Generally, the Department does not intend a
massive revision, - but rather to address specific concerns
- in clarity, specificity, content updating,
developmental appropriateness and reducing the
number of benchmarks.
35Sunshine State Standards Review 2005
- An Internet stakeholder input system on the DOE
website is being designed so that stakeholders
can suggest changes to individual benchmarks.
This should be operational in November 2004.
36Sunshine State Standards Review 2005
- The intent is that, using the current standards
as a first draft, a nationally recognized
standards-writing organization will draft new
standards in accordance with a specific blueprint
for change determined by the DOE with stakeholder
input. - There will be widespread stakeholder review of
this draft. - Please contribute to the requests on the web site
when asked.
