Title: First of all, what is scientific notation

1
First of all, what is scientific notation?
  • Scientific Notation is an easier way of writing
very large or very small numbers. A number
expressed in scientific notation is expressed as
a decimal number between 1 and 10 multiplied by a
    power of 10 . (example is 1.122 x 10-5)

2
Scientific Notation The Donkey and the Zebra
  • One day, a donkey found a zebra.I bet I am
smarter than you in math! Said the donkey.
Okay, we can do a project on scientific
notation. Whoever can do the better project is
the smarter animal said the zebra. Well, Im
going to start now! Said the donkey.

3
Scientific Notation The Donkey and the Zebra
  • This has been a big thing between the zebra
and donkey. They hired judges to see who would
have the better project.First, we will see what
    the donkey is working on.

4
Scientific Notation The Donkey and the Zebra
  • The Donkey has a button that is 1 millimeter in
diameter and he wants to find out how many
kilometers that are in the millimeter. Then,
thats when he will use scientific notation to
finish his project. Using rulers, papers, and
calculators, the donkey finds out that there are
    0.0000001 kilometers in a millimeter.

5
Scientific Notation The Donkey and the Zebra
  • Now its time to find the scientific notation.
1.0 10-6 - thats the scientific notation, but
I should tell you how I found it. First, I took
the number 1.0, then I moved the decimal point 6
places over to the left. The reason why I moved
it to the left is because I need a number that is
less than 10 and greater than 0. Our new number
is 0.0000001 . We moved it over 6 places, so our
new exponent will have to be 6.

6
Scientific Notation The Donkey and the Zebra
  • That was the end of the donkeys project. Lets
take a look at the zebras project. He did it on
    a human in nanometers.

7
Scientific Notation The Donkey and the Zebra
  • This is going to be an extremely large number.
The person that we are measuring is 5 feet. There
are 25,400,000 nanometers in only 1 inch! Thats
going to be a lot of nanometers for someone who
is 5 feet! Lets do the math. 60 x 25,400,000
    1,524,000,000.There are 1,524,000,000 nanometers
in 5 feet. Now all we have to do is convert it
into scientific notation. We first need to make
it a number less than 10 but greater than 0. Move
it over 9 times and you should get 1.524 . Always
remember that the exponent is always the number
of times we moved the decimal point. The
    scientific notation should be 1.524 x 109 .

8
The Winner!
  • Its time to find the winner! The judges score
the donkey 10/10zebra 10/10They both tied!
Well, I guess we are both smart in math said
the donkey. I guess so! said the zebra. But,
said the donkey. But what? said the zebra. I
surely am smarter than you in science! said the
donkey Its on then! said the zebra.
