Genesis 221-2
  • 1 Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to
    him, Abraham!
  • Here I am, he replied.
  • 2 Then God said, Take your son, your only son,
Isaac, whom you love, and go to the region of
Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering
on one of the mountains I will tell you about.

4
Genesis 223-5
  • 3 Early the next morning Abraham got up and
saddled his donkey. He took with him two of his
servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut
enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out
for the place God had told him about. 4 On the
third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in
the distance. 5 He said to his servants, Stay
here with the donkey while I and the boy go over
there. We will worship and then we will come back
    to you.

5
Genesis 226-7
  • 6 Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering
and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself
carried the fire and the knife. As the two of
them went on together, 7 Isaac spoke up and said
    to his father Abraham, Father?
  • Yes, my son? Abraham replied.
  • The fire and wood are here, Isaac said, but
where is the lamb for the burnt offering?

6
Genesis 228-9
  • 8 Abraham answered, God himself will provide the
lamb for the burnt offering, my son. And the two
    of them went on together.
  • 9 When they reached the place God had told him
about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged
the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid
him on the altar, on top of the wood.

7
Genesis 2210-12
  • 10 Then he reached out his hand and took the
knife to slay his son. 11 But the angel of the
Lord called out to him from heaven, Abraham!
    Abraham!
  • Here I am, he replied.
  • 12 Do not lay a hand on the boy, he said. Do
not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear
God, because you have not withheld from me your
    son, your only son.

8
Genesis 2213-14
  • 13 Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he
saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and
took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt
offering instead of his son. 14 So Abraham called
that place The Lord Will Provide. And to this day
it is said, On the mountain of the Lord it will
    be provided.

9
Genesis 2215-17a
  • 15 The angel of the Lord called to Abraham from
heaven a second time 16 and said, I swear by
myself, declares the Lord, that because you have
done this and have not withheld your son, your
only son, 17 I will surely bless you and make
your descendants as numerous as the stars in the
sky and as the sand on the seashore.

10
Genesis 2217b-18
  • Your descendants will take possession of the
cities of their enemies, 18 and through your
offspring all nations on earth will be blessed,
    because you have obeyed me.

11
Genesis 2217b-18
  • Your descendants will take possession of the
cities of their enemies, 18 and through your
offspring all nations on earth will be blessed,
    because you have obeyed me.

12
2 Chronicles 31
  • Then Solomon began to build the temple of the
Lord in Jerusalem on Mount Moriah, where the Lord
had appeared to his father David.

13
John 1812-14
  • 12 Then the detachment of soldiers with its
commander and the Jewish officials arrested
Jesus. They bound him 13 and brought him first to
Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the
high priest that year. 14 Caiaphas was the one
who had advised the Jews that it would be good if
one man died for the people.

14
John 1815-16
  • 15 Simon Peter and another disciple were
following Jesus. Because this disciple was known
to the high priest, he went with Jesus into the
high priests courtyard, 16 but Peter had to wait
outside at the door. The other disciple, who was
known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the
girl on duty there and brought Peter in.

15
John 1817-18
  • 17 You are not one of his disciples, are you?
the girl at the door asked Peter.
  • He replied, I am not.
  • 18 It was cold, and the servants and officials
stood around a fire they had made to keep warm.
Peter also was standing with them, warming
    himself.

16
John 1819-21
  • 19 Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus
about his disciples and his teaching.
  • 20 I have spoken openly to the world, Jesus
replied. I always taught in synagogues or at the
temple, where all the Jews come together. I said
nothing in secret. 21 Why question me? Ask those
who heard me. Surely they know what I said.

17
John 1822
  • 22 When Jesus said this, one of the officials
nearby struck him in the face. Is this the way
you answer the high priest? he demanded.

18
John 1823-24
  • 23 If I said something wrong, Jesus replied,
testify as to what is wrong. But if I spoke the
truth, why did you strike me? 24 Then Annas sent
him, still bound, to Caiaphas the high priest.

19
Annas
  • High priest from AD 6 to AD 15.
  • High priests were supposed to be appointed for
life, but the Romans decided otherwise.
  • Five of Annas sons served as high priest, as did
    Caiaphas, his son-in-law.
  • Caiaphas was high priest from AD 18 to AD 36.
    (See prophecy in John 1145-53.)

20
Roman Governor of Judea
  • He had power of life and death in the region. He
had to approve sentences of death passed by the
    Sanhedrin.
  • He had an army of 2500-5000 infantry plus a few
    hundred mounted cavalry.
  • He appointed the high priest and controlled the
    Temple and its money.

21
Roman Governor of Judea
  • He had the ceremonial clothing and instruments of
the high priest in his custody, and released it
only as he chose for important religious
    occasions.
  • He would move to Jerusalem with extra troops
during religious festivals to maintain order.

22
High Priest
  • Read Exodus 28 for the instructions God gave
regarding the high priests ceremonial clothing.
