Light is in the middle of the electromagnetic
spectrum.
  • Visible light is the part of the electromagnetic
    spectrum that we can see.

3
Light is really fast!
  • How fast?

About 186,000 miles per second! That means light
from the sun takes about 8 minutes to go the 93
million miles to earth.
  • Does this seem SLOW? Well, if you could DRIVE to
the sun at 60 mph, it would take you 177 years to
get there! In one second, light can go around the
    earth 7 times!

4
Light Sources
  • Luminous objects produce their own light.

Back to Activity
5
Illuminated Sources of Light
  • Illuminated objects reflect light. They do not
    produce their own light.

6
Light Sources
  • Artificial light sources are caused by something,
usually man. Fire is considered to be an
artificial light source because the fuel doesnt
    give light unless it combusts.

7
Light Sources
  • Natural light sources are not made by man.

Sources of Light
  • Our most important natural source of light is the
    sun.
  • Our most important artificial source of light is
    electricity.

You Try It!
Possible Answers
  • Sort the following sources of light into the
categories of luminous, illuminated, natural, and
artificial. You will use the words more than
once. Be ready to explain your reasoning.
  • Lightning fire light bulb candle
  • Electric eel sun moon planets
  • bike reflectors stars fireflies match
  • flashlight fireworks volcano mirror

  • Objectives The learner will
  • Sort sources of light using the terms luminous,
    illuminated, natural, and artificial.
  • Know the speed of light.
  • Know that the sun is our most important natural
source of light, and electricity is our most
    important artificial source of light.
  • Students will need a piece of paper and pencil to
do the You Try It! slide. It might be helpful to
have them work in groups to solve the slide. The
students must be able to explain why they grouped
the light sources as they did. If the grouping
    is logical, they are correct.

Possible answers to You Try It! If students can
logically explain their categories, they are
correct.
