  • How To Change A Flat Tire

One of the many essential functions of a
volunteer vanpool driver is the ability to
change a flat tire.

This demonstration represents one type of vehicle
in our fleet. Please make yourself familiar with
where the spare tire is and the procedures
applicable to the vanpool vehicle provided to you
before you need them.

Please follow these simple guidelines to ensure
that your tire is safely and properly changed.

If you have a flat tire while driving
  • Do not brake heavily.
  • Gradually decrease the vehicles speed.
  • Hold the steering wheel firmly.
  • Slowly move to a safe place on the side of the
    road.

Carefully exit vehicle, and
  • Determine which tire is flat.
  • Ensure youre in a safe place.
  • Make sure the ground is flat, hard-packed, and
    level.
  • Move vehicle, if necessary, to protect yourself
    while changing the tire.

Preparing to Change a Flat Tire

Once you have found a safe place to change your
tire, make sure to
  • Activate the warning flashers.
  • Place gearshift in park.
  • Turn off the engine.

  • Set the parking brake.

  • Place safety triangles along roadway at
    recommended distances.
  • 10 feet behind
  • 100 feet behind
  • 100 feet in front
  • Curves, hills, and divided highways require
    different placement. Follow triangle instructions.

  • Block both sides (front and back) of the wheel
    that is diagonally opposite the tire you are
    changing. Use rocks or other stable objects.

Safety Tips

To ensure your safety while changing a tire,
please remember the following safety tips
  • Do not put any part of your body under the
    vehicle while changing a tire.
  • Do not start the engine when the vehicle is on
    the jack.
  • Change the tire using only the jack supplied in
    the vehicle. Do not use other tools.

  • Open the compartment on the right side of the
    cargo area.

Removing the Spare Tire

The spare tire for your vehicle may be stowed
under the rear of your vehicle. To remove the
spare tire
  • Open the rear doors and remove the thumbscrew and
    anti-theft bracket.
  • If finger pressure will not remove the
    thumbscrew, use the lug wrench to loosen the
    screw.

  • Remove access plug under the left door.

  • Insert the tip of the jack handle through the
    access hole and into the tube.

  • Turn the jack handle counterclockwise until the
    cable is slack and the tire can be slid from
    under the vehicle.

  • Remove retainer from the spare tire.

Removing the Flat Tire

Now that you have the spare ready to go, lets
remove the flat tire
  • Insert the tapered end of the lug wrench behind
    wheel cover and twist off.

  • Using the lug wrench and turning
    counterclockwise, loosen the wheel nut lugs ½
    turn. No more.

  • Carefully apply additional pressure on lug
    wrench, if needed.
  • Do not further loosen or remove the lug nuts
    until the tire is raised off the ground.

  • Assemble the jack handle sections together and
    lock into place.

  • Lock the jack handle into the jack.
  • Use the jack handle to slide the jack under the
    vehicle.

  • Always position the jack under the axle to raise
    the vehicle.
  • Never use the front or rear differential as a
    jacking point.
  • Do not place the jack under or on the steering
    linkage.

  • Raise the vehicle until the tire is completely
    off of the ground.

  • Finish removing the lug nuts with the lug wrench.

  • Carefully remove the flat tire.

Replacing the Flat Tire

Youve removed the flat tire. Now, lets
replace it with the spare
  • Roll the spare tire into place.
  • Always remove any dirt or corrosion present on
    the mounting surface of the wheel.
  • Carefully lift the spare tire and place it on the
    lug bolts.

  • Thread the lug nuts on the studs with the beveled
    face toward the wheel.

  • Use the lug nut wrench, turning clockwise, to
    screw the lug nuts snugly against the wheel.

  • Slowly lower the vehicle by turning the jack
    handle counterclockwise.

  • Remove the jack and fully tighten the lug nuts
    with the lug wrench in the following pattern

  • Install the wheel cover, if your van has one,
    making sure it is securely snapped into place.

  • Unblock the wheel.

Stowing the Flat Tire

Failure to follow the spare tire stowage
instructions may result in cable failure or loss
of the tire

  • Lay the tire on the ground with the valve stem
    facing in the direction specified on the Tire
    Changing Instructions located with the jack
    hardware.

  • Slide the wheel partially under the vehicle and
    install the retainer through the wheel center.
  • Pull on the cable to align the components at the
    end of the cable.

  • Insert the jack handle into the access hole and
    into the tube.
  • Turn the jack handle clockwise until the tire is
    raised to its stowed position underneath the
    vehicle.

  • Note The effort to turn the jack handle
    increases significantly and the spare tire
    carrier ratchets or slips when the tire is raised
    to its maximum.

  • Check that the tire lies flat against the frame
    and is properly tightened.
  • Try to push or pull, then turn the tire to make
    sure that it will not move.

  • Replace the jack, jack handle, extender, and lug
    wrench.
  • Replace the anti-theft bracket and thumb screw.

Repairing the Flat Tire

To repair the flat tire
  • Bring it to Pierce Transit. Well repair it or
    replace it.
  • Take it to a Les Schwab store. Theyll repair it
    if they can. Use your Voyager card to pay for it.
  • Do NOT purchase a new tire! If the tire is beyond
    repair, return it to Pierce Transit for a
    replacement.
