Title: Proposal for a new publication Transactions of Haptics

1
Proposal for a new publication Transactions of
Haptics
  • IEEE Robotics and Automation Society
  • Ad-Hoc Committee
  • By William R Hamel
  • Beijing 2006

2
Background
  • The word Haptics is used in two contexts
  • The haptic perceptual system
  • Gibson's Definition (1966) "The sensibility of
the individual to the world adjacent to his body
    by use of his body"
  • Technologies for haptic interactions
  • Electromechanical methods for stimulating a
persons sensors to give the perception of
    substance

3
Haptic interfaces
  • First take away the drum
  • Then use haptic interfaces to provide the same
    feel of hitting a drum
  • Perception is still that of hitting a drum.
Sound, vision, smell etc can then be added.
  • Also
  • Drum can be positioned arbitrarily (upside down,
    intersecting, moving)
  • Sound need not correspond with the feel, eg
xylophone could be programmed to sound like
    bongos
  • Remote robots could be added to do bilateral
    teleoperation of remote drums!

4
Why the need for a new journal
  • Field is seeing fast growth in interest
  • Exponential growth in publications
  • Steady growth in new products
  • High interest in new areas including
  • Games
  • Automobile Driver controls
  • Mobile computing
  • Surgical simulation and robotics
  • Assistive and rehabilitation robotics
  • Prosthetics
  • No single recognised publication forum

Novint Falcon proposed haptic interface for
gaming
5
Exponential growth in publications
  • Journals and conferences in IEEExplore with the
    word Haptic(s) in title

6
Compendex and Inspec publications with the word
haptic(s) in the title
  • Estimate is that about 33 of haptics papers will
use the term haptics in title

7
Objectives
  • Provide a focus for publishing efforts for the
    haptic community
  • Provide exemplar information on haptics by
providing archival access to the premier research
    work
  • Use the new RAS Technical Committee, and the
    associated conferences (World haptics, Haptics
Symposium and Eurohaptics) to solicit high
    quality papers
  • Provide a publication route for researchers
unable to attend the premier haptic conferences.
  • It is expected that the Transactions on
Haptics will attract new members to IEEE and
increase IEEE revenue through additional library
subscriptions. It is important that non engineers
are afforded access since the community includes
researchers active in psychology and neuroscience

8
Haptic domains for a publication
  • Mechanical engineering and mechatronic design
  • Novel devices, actuators and sensors
  • Device design including kinematics and control
  • Rendering algorithms
  • Collision detection and response
  • Physics
  • Multi-modal interactions (linking with sound and
    visual cues)
  • Applications
  • Scientific visualisation
  • Human machine interfacing
  • Training and simulation
  • Perception - Research on perceptions that
    might include mechanical or electrical
    stimulation
  • perceptual research facilitated by a particular
haptic device (e.g. perception of curvature )
  • Neuroscience
  • Techniques and instrumentation to measure the
    dynamics of neuro-muscular systems
  • Telemanipulators and teleoperation
  • Architecture that account for operator dynamics
  • User effectiveness measures
  • Control

9
Pros
  • Responding to a growing interest in haptics and
    haptic technology
  • Resource for new industries and new researchers
  • A high quality journal for researchers
  • Attract new authors and papers
  • Already has support from leading academics

10
Cons
  • May be seen as too technology oriented for some
    researchers in perception, psychophysics or
    neuro-science
  • May draw papers from ACM Transactions Applied
Perception, Haptics-E, as well as other IEEE
    journals

11
Competitive Survey
  • ACM Transactions on Applied Perception

  • IEEE T Biomedical engineering
  • IEEE T Industrial Electronics
  • IEEE T Neural Systems and Rehabilitation
