3Why do you think that air is important to
animals?
4All living things breathe in air. Every moment
of every day, we breathe air. Whatever you are
doing, you are breathing. We breathe air in
through our nose and mouth and into our lungs.
5Dogs, cats, horses, cows, lions and many other
animals have lungs and breathe like humans.
6Many animals breathe in a different way than
humans. Slugs and snails have breathing holes in
their sides. The holes open and shut as they
breathe air.
7Worms breathe through their skin. Through their
soft, moist skin, they absorb water which has
oxygen in it.
8Spiders breathe through special openings under
their bodies. Some water spiders build a silken
trap in the water and fill it with air to breathe.
9Fish gulp water in through their mouths. The
water goes over gills and they get air from the
water.
10Frogs breathe by gulping air down into their
lungs, but they also breathe through their skin.
11Insects, like grasshoppers, caterpillars, flies,
moths and butterflies breathe air through tiny
holes found along each side of their body.
12The water beetle collects air under its wings and
uses the air to breathe under water.
13Birds breathe air into their lungs. They have air
sacs going out from their lungs and also have air
spaces inside their bones.
14Snakes have two lungs, one behind the other.
Their lungs are long and narrow like their bodies.
15All living things breathe, but they get the air
they need in different ways. Without air, they
would die. Air to breathe is VERY IMPORTANT!
