CREB has been termed the memory molecule.
Studies in fruit flies, sea slugs and mice
suggest that CREB may play an important role in
memory. Some of the most striking data
implicating CREB in memory comes from a strain of
mice that lacks the genes to produce the CREB.
Recently we conducted a study to evaluate whether
these mice show deficient Pavlovian emotional
learning (Falls et al., 2000). Seventeen Wild
Type (i.e., normal) and 20 CREB deficient mice
mice were given Pavlovian conditioning in which a
tone was paired with mild foot shock. Twenty
four hours later, the mice were tested for
conditioned fear using the fear-potentiated
startle paradigm in which conditioned fear is
operationally defined as elevated startle
amplitude in the presence versus the absence of
the tone. The data from this experiment are shown
in the figure.
