• Deborah was the first known American woman to
  impersonate a man in order to join the army and
  take part in a combat.
• She was a brave solider and volunteered for
  dangerous missions.

• Her father abandoned the family and went off to
  sea. Her mother was poor so she couldnt care
  for her kids so she sent them to different
  neighbors and relatives.
• At around the age of eight she became an
  indentured servant in the house hold of Jeremiah
  Tomas in Middleborough.
• On May 20,1782 at the age of 21 she joined the
  army as a man named Robert Shurtleff.

• Deborah married Benjamin Gannet and had four
  children, Earl, Mary, and Patience.
• Life Lesson As a woman you should be able to do
