• Scientists think that black-backed jackals look
  like dogs that lived 6 million years ago.
• I chose the black-backed jackal, because the
  first time I saw it I thought they were
  interesting animals so I wanted to learn about
  them.
• I think they look like dogs too.

Habitat

• Black-backed jackals like the dry grasslands of
  the African savanna.
• They are only found in Africa.
• They howl and scream to communicate with each
  other.
• They live by lions, hyenas, giraffes, and
  antelopes.

Diet

• They ignore leaves and grass, because they cant
  digest them.
• Jackals eat almost anything, including mice,
  fruit, bugs, birds, nuts and worms.
• Sometimes they hunt and kill bigger animals like
  the gazelle.

Babies

• A jackal has four to six pups in litter.
• In order to get food for the babies adults must
  chew the food first and then spit it out for the
  babies to eat.
• By the time the baby jackal is six months old it
  stops drinking its mothers milk.
• After 2 months the babies can howl and eat solid
  food.

Description

• There are 3 types of jackals, black-backed,
  golden and striped.
• Black-backed jackals are usually gray on their
  back and their chest is white and their legs and
  sides are brown.
• Jackals weigh more than 33 pounds.
