Definition
  • All words may be classified into groups called
    parts of speech.
  • NOUNS name persons, places, things, and ideas.
  • There are common and proper nouns.

3
Forming the plural noun
  • Rule One
  • To most singular nouns, add s to form the
    plural
  • For example ropes, boots, books, desks

4
Plural Nouns
  • Rule Two
  • When the singular form ends in s, sh, ch, x, or
    z, add es
  • For example glasses, bushes, coaches, foxes,
    fizzes

5
Plural Nouns
  • Rule Three
  • When a singular noun ends in o, add s to make it
    plural
  • For example rodeos, studios, photos, silos,
    banjos, pianos

6
Plural Nouns
  • Rule Four
  • When the singular noun ends in y preceded by a
consonant, change the y to an i and add es
  • For example city-cities, lady-ladies,
    country-countries
  • When the y is preceded by a vowel (a,e,i,o,u), do
not change the y to an i, simply add s
  • For example toy-toys, play-plays, day-days

7
Plural Nouns
  • Rule Five
  • For some nouns ending in f simply add s
    beliefs, huffs, wharfs, handkerchiefs
  • For many words ending in f or fe, change the f to
a v and add es or s. Since there is no rule to
follow, these words have to be memorized. For
    example
  • Thief-thieves, self-selves, elf-elves, wife-wives

8
Plural Nouns
  • Rule Six
  • Some nouns have the same form in both the
    singular and the plural
  • These are deer, tuna, salmon, cod, trout, pike,
    bass, sheep, moose, elk

9
Plural Nouns
  • Rule Seven
  • For some nouns, the plurals are formed in special
    ways.
