Introduction

• Ellis Island is an historic place located at the
  mouth of the Hudson River in New York, in New
  Jersey.
• EI has had different names Kiosht, Oyster Island
  and Giggert Island.

• It was named Kiosht by the Mohegan Indians.
• Then, a Dutch man whose name was Michael Paaw
  renamed the island Oyster Island in the 1630s.
• In 1664, the British took possession of the area
  and they renamed it Gull Island. Later, the name
  of the island changed to Gibbert Island because a
  lot of men were hanged. EI was bought in 1808 by
  the US War Departement for 10.000 . In 1814, EI
  became an immigrant station.

• The Ellis Island Immigrant Station was designed
  by two architects Edward Lippincott Tilton and
  William Boring. They received a gold medal at the
  1900 Paris Exposition for the buildings design.
• The homestead Act was a law that gave a freehold
  title to 160 acres (one quarter section or about
  65 hectares) of undeveloped land . The person to
  whom the title was granted had to be at least 21
  years old, to have built on the section, to have
  farmed on it for 5 years, and to have a house
  that was at least of 12 by 14 feet (3.6X4.3 m) in
  size. The Act was signed into a law by President
  Abraham Lincoln on May 20, 1862.
• Ellis Island welcomed 12 million people and was
  closed in november 1954.

• The immigrants were subjects to a checkup and
  administrative exam.
• The doctors dealt with the inspection of the
  immigrants who were numerous. If there was a
  possible problem, the immigrants were marked
  with chalk.
• Then, they took a number of exams an ocular
  exam was done by using a button hook.
• Moreover, a lot of questions was asked to the
  immigrants who didnt speak the same language.
  Thats why a translator was present.

Conclusion

• Ellis Island welcomed several million of
  immigrants between 1892 and 1954. These people
  would finally fulfill their American Dream.
• Now, its a museum and a national monument.
