What is Andalucia?

• Also known as Southern Spain, its present name
  derives from the Arabic word al andaluz.
• Andalucia has been ruled by many groups,
  including the Phoenicians, Romans, Visigoth
  Kings, Arabs, and the Catholic Kings.
• This diversity has created what today is known as
  andaluz, or the Southern Spanish dialect.

• Alhambra (Granada). The Moors last defense
  against Los Reyes Catolicos until 1492.

Los gitanos (The Gypsies)

• In 1425, it is believed that the first gitanos
  arrived in Zaragosa, Spain. Andalucia became
  their most heavily settled area. Today, there
  are believed to be 600,000 gitanos in Andalucia.

El Flamenco

• This music is considered to be the authentic
  representation of el andaluz. It shows many
  characteristics of the dialect.

Pronunciation of andaluz

• ASPIRATION
• 1) The aspiration of the /s/ at the end of a
  syllable or word.
• Ex) Mih niñoh, eto que eh?
• Mis niños, esto que es?
• Smoothing out of the /x/ consonant.
• Ex) muhé, hitano, trabajá
• Mujer, gitano, trabajar
• EL SESEO and EL CECEO
• Ex) Dos Hermanas
• EL YEÍSMO
• Equalling of the sound of /ll/ and /y/
• Ex) Seviya, ayí, yega
• Sevilla, allí, llega
• The loss of the final consonant in a word
• Ex) Madrid is instead Madrí.
• Loss of the /d/ in ido and ado
• Ex) Stoy super cansao. No he dormio na.
• Estoy super cansado. No he dormido nada.
• Shortening of words
