Title: Grasslands
1Grasslands
2Where in the World is this biome?
3Landforms
Some landforms in African grasslands mostly trees
and woodlands. Some other ones are the Atlas
Mountains. The African grasslands are known for
their rich animal life. As you can imagine there
are not many landforms in the grasslands.
4Animals
- Bison- The Bison graze in the morning and evening
but spend the rest of their day chewing their cud
or wallowing in mud to get rid of their bugs - Brown Hyena- During the day the hyena sleeps
among the rocks and tall grass. It emerges at
night to hunt for pray such as rodents or birds. - Warthog- Warthogs like to have water around them
for drinking. They sleep among rocks and graze
on short grass. -
5Vegetation and Plants
Milkweed Plant- The milkweed plant and the
monarch butterfly depend upon each other. The
monarch larva eats the Milkweed leaves, witch
are poisonous to most insects. This Makes the
monarchs poisonous to birds. Big Bluestem
Grass- Big Bluestem grass is the tallest plant
that grows on the grasslands. It can reach a
height of 11 feet tall. This grass was an
important source of food for the American
Bison. Stinging Nettle Plant- The stinging
nettle plant looks very pretty in bloom but it
has little prickly hairs that stick in your skin
and sting and itch like crazy.
6Climate and Weather
Grasslands in Africa have mostly warm
temperatures all year long. Some rainfall occurs
during the year. Grasslands in the United States
have more rainfall than the ones in Africa.
