Analyzer Connectivity Options
  • By David Bergeron, P.E.
  • TECO -
  • Thompson Equipment Company

2
Topics
  • Platforms/Operating Systems
  • HMI/HSI
  • Fieldbus (Analyzer Level)
  • OPC (Application Level)
  • Overall (Plant Level)

3
Windows 2000
  • The next version of Windows NT
  • High level, secure operation system well suited
    for large mission critical applications
  • -Web Server
  • -Data Server (Real Time,Historical,Alarms)
  • Used as data server and client for Operator
workstations and data servers (Data Access
Server, Historical Data Logging, and Alarm
    Server, etc)

4
Windows CE
  • Small, Modular, embedded platform
  • Allows full integration of devices with plant IT
    infrastructure
  • Real-Time support
  • Boots from flash disk (Diskless Operation)
  • Network support
  • Currently used in a wide range of devices

5
Human System/Machine Interface
  • Provides the interface to your instrumentation
    data on your computer
  • Graphics
  • Alarms
  • Trends
  • Reports
  • Security
  • HMI software is available for Windows CE through
    Windows 2000
  • Support the OPC data access specification as well
    as other OPC specs
  • Support Ethernet and TCP/IP and DCOM
  • Supports thin clients

6
Introduction to Fieldbus
  • Fieldbus History
  • What is Fieldbus?
  • Some advantages of Fieldbus

What fieldbus is ?
Fieldbus
  • ... an all-digital, bi-directional communication
    network for field instruments/Analyzers
  • Fieldbus technology provides continuous
    monitoring of Multi-Variable-Field instruments in
the DCS-System as the diagnostic of the
    instruments
  • Multi-Variable-Field instruments, e.g.-
    T-Transmitter T-Value in E.U. and status
    signals, ...- P-Transmitter P-Value in E.U. and
    status signals, ...- F-Transmitter F-Value and
    Quantity-Value and status signals, ...-
E-Transmitter Current and Voltage and Active
power and Frequency, ...- Positioner / Actuator
    Positioning setpoint and Positioning feedback
and End position alarm and Service on-demand
    status, ...
  • Multi-drop connection of field instruments
    (mA-Supply and Data communication)
  • Real-time performance for control loops and alarm
    acquisition possible !
  • The distributed intelligence in the field can now
    really used with the Fieldbus
  • Fieldbus even allows control at the device level.

9
Fieldbus Foundation
  • Non-Profit Organization made up of over 100
    Control and Automation Products
  • Mission to create an "open," interoperable
fieldbus standard that is based on the
    International Standards Organization's Open
    System Interconnect (OSI/ISO) seven-layer
    communications model.

10
OPC (Object Linking and Embedding for Process
Control)
  • The Problem that provided the motivation
  • OPC Foundation
  • OPC Foundation Charter
  • What is OPC?
  • OPC Specifications
  • Data Access Standard
  • Alarm/Events Standard
  • Historical Data Access

11
What is OPC?
  • OPC consists of a standard set of interfaces,
properties, and methods for use in
    process-control and manufacturing-automation
    applications. The Active X/COM technologies
define how individual software components can
interact and share data. OPC provides a common
    interface for communicating with diverse
    process-control devices, regardless of the
controlling software or devices in the process.

OPC Foundation
  • Formed in mid 90s
  • Made up of over 220 member companies around the
    world
  • Represented by Hardware and Software Vendors
  • Has full cooperation and backing of Microsoft

16
OPC Foundation Charter
  • To develop an open and interoperable interface
standard, based upon the functional requirements
of Microsoft COM, DCOM and Active X technology,
    that fosters greater interoperability between
    automation/control applications, field
    systems/devices, and business/office
    applications.

17
OPC Specifications
  • Data Access
  • Defines interface standards for real-time data
  • Alarm/Events
  • Defines interface standards for Alarms Events
  • Historical Data Access
  • Defines interface standards for Historical Data
