• You may be surprised to learn that koala bears
  are not bears at all. There is so much more to
  learn about koalas.

  Habitat, what koalas like to eat, how they care
  for their Joeys, and also some interesting and
  amazing facts about koalas.

  is hard to believe but koalas have special hands
  and feet to help them climb trees.

WHERE KOALAS LIVE
Have you ever wondered how koalas live?
During most of the day, a koala sleeps high up in
the fork of a eucalyptus tree.

• Koalas live on the east coast of Australia.
  Koalas need to live in thick forests because they
  eat so many leaves. They nearly spend all their
  time in the trees using their sharp curved claws
  and long toes to climb and hold onto the tree
  branches.

WHAT KOALAS EAT

• Have you thought about what koalas eat? An adult
  eats from 1 to 2 pounds of leaves. Koalas are
  very picky eaters.

• They may feed on one leafy tree and pass up
  another. Thats because some eucalyptus trees
  contain an extremely deadly poison in their
  leaves.

All About Joey

• Do you realize that koalas have babies? When a
  Joey is born it is as small as a nickel.

• A Joey spends six months in the mothers pouch.
  The Joey's eyes remain closed for five months.
  The Joey will go on the mothers back when it is
  about seven months old.

WHAT KOALAS LOOK LIKE

• A koala looks like a teddy bear. But it is not a
  bear at all. They are marsupials, like kangaroos.
  Female koalas have pouches where young koalas
  feed and grow.

Koalas are nocturnal animals. This means that
they usually sleep during the day and are awake
at night. Most people only get to see koalas when
they are sleeping in the day time, and dont see
them when theyre active at night. This is why
many people think that koalas are lazy animals.
