Title: What Is Radon

1
What Is Radon?
  • Radon is a radioactive element that is an
extremely toxic, colorless, odorless gas that is
derived from the decay of radium that could
possibly be in the soil underneath your home.
  • Radon is the 1 cause of lung cancer among non-
smokers in America killing 21,000 and rising.
  • 2,900 of these deaths occurred among people who
    had never smoked.

2
Where Does Radon Come From?
  • Radon is the decay product of Radium and part of
the long decay chain of Uranium in the earths
crust. It is present In almost all rock, soil,
    and water.
  • Radon typically moves up through the ground to
the air above and into your home through the
cracks and other holes in the foundation of your
    home.
  • The amount of radon in the soil depends on soil
chemistry, which varies from one house to the
    next.

3
Could My Home Have Radon?
  • More than half of the state of Minnesota is in a
zone that has the highest potential risk for
    elevated Radon levels.
  • ALL HOMES SHOULD BE TESTED FOR RADON! Regardless
of geographic location or zone designation.
  • The only way to be 100 sure that you or your
family are not at risk for lung cancer due to
high radon levels is to TEST YOUR HOME!

4
How Do I Test?
  • A Radon test kit is a simple, effective and easy
way to acquire the radon level in your home.
  • A simple test kit run of 7 days would tell you if
you are at risk for lung cancer from high Radon
levels from the soil underneath your home.
  • Your Radon test results may be reported
picocuries per liter of air (pCi/L). If your
Radon level is above 4 (pCi/L) or higher, you are
at unsafe levels and EPA recommends you fix your
home to bring the high levels down to inhabitable
    and safe conditions.

5
