Northern Fence Lizard Sceloporus undulatus
hyacinthinus Class Reptilia Order Squamata Family
Iguanidae
A rough, almost spiny llizard, 10 18 cm
(6-7in) long. Fem. Has distinctive
crossbanding on back and is mostly gray. Male is
mostly brown, pattern less obvious on back,
bluish throat patch, also bluish areas on sides
and belly during during breeding season.

Coal Skink Eumeces anthracinus Class
Reptilia Order Squamata Family Scincidae
Like all skinks, the coal skink has smooth
scales. 12 18 cm (5 7 in), dark stripe on
side light stripes along side of body extend
onto tail. Found in southern and eastern WV.

Five-lined Skink Eumeces fasciatus Class

The five-lined skink varies in size from 12 22
cm. Juveniles have blue tails. Five lines are
easily visible on juveniles, usually visible on
adult females, and may be indistinct on adult
males. Adult males get orange-red jaw coloration
during breeding season. Told from the
similar broadhead skink by facial scale patterns
(see above).

Very large 16 34 cm. Jaws of large males are
swollen in appearance. Colors of males, females,
juveniles generally similar to five-lined skink.
If unsure of id, check facial scales.
Ground Skink Scincella lateralis Class

7 15 cm. Brown back, with dark dorso-lateral
stripe. Shade of brown on back is variable
dorso-lateral stripe is nearly indistinguishable
from back on darker individuals. WVs smallest
and plainest skink.
