Title: MARINE Maritime Incident Research and Innovation Network

1
MARINEMaritime Incident Research and Innovation
Network
  • Project Overview
  • Fernando Lobo Pereira
  • MARINE Project Coordinator

2
Maritime Incidents
  • Man-made and natural maritime incidents include
    artificial outfalls, artificial and natural
    biologic perturbations, marine activities and
events to weaken security-related events or
activities with negative marine impact, geologic
    events (underwater landslides, tsunamis, etc.).
  • In order to encompass this wider scope, the
MARINE project envisages an open and flexible
networking framework which has the potential to
integrate an extremely diversified range of
    institutions pertinent to environmental, social,
    research, educational, civil defense, and
    military issues.

  • November 2002 the tank ship Prestige-Nassau
spilled ca 10,000 tons of oil off the coast of
    Galicia during several days.
  • February 1996 the Sea Empress spilled ca 72,000
tons of crude oil near Milford Haven in Wales.
  • January 1993 The Braer Tanker ran aground
spilling 85,000 tons of crude oil off the
    Shetland Islands.
  • December 1992 A tank ship called Aegean Sea
spilled 80,000 tons of crude near the port of La
    Coruña in Spain.
  • May 1991 The ABT Summer leaked oil after an
explosion off Angola spilling 260,000 tonnes.
  • April 1991 The Cypriot oil tanker Haven spilled
more than 50,000 tons of oil off Genoa in Italy.
  • January 1991 Iraq released about 460 million
gallons of crude oil into the Persian Gulf during
    the Gulf War.
  • March 1989 The Exxon Valdez is grounded and
spilled 38,800 tons of crude oil into Prince
William Sound in Alaska, the worst spill in US
    history.
  • August 1983 Fire broke out on the Castillo de
Bellver and its cargo of 252,000 tones of oil

Prestige
Problem Data collection to feed oceanographic
prediction models
5
Prestige disaster
  • 3D data time evolution is required
  • air, ocean, land

6
Maritime Incident Stages
  • Decide what to do (actions to perform, data to be
collected) and how to do it (which technologies
    and systems to use)

7
MARINE Project
  • Create and foster an Excellence Network to
promote the development and transfer of knowledge
and innovation in the field of maritime incidents
within the context of maritime security and of
    the protection of marine habitats
  • Demonstrate and transfer knowledge related to the
application of emergent technologies in this
    domain.
  • Focus on systems based on autonomous (air,
    surface, underwater) vehicles, networked devices,
    remote sensing, and bioremediation.
