2NTP Challenges
- Poor case finding - 50 case detection rate in
2003 - Poor Treatment adherence treatment success rate
67 and default rate -18 in 2003
3ACSM could increase the case detection and cure
rate by 5-10!
4Mobilizing political commitment and resources for
TB
- CCM, chaired by the First Lady of Georgia,
became a functional body for coordinating
different programmes in the field of AIDS, TB and
Malaria control - Domestic Expenditure for TB Control have been
increasing - Although TB control is fully under responsibility
of the Central Government, there is an evidence
of increased commitment to TB control by the
Local Governments - There is an effective coordination and
collaboration among partner agencies active in TB
control (including ACSM activities), with the NTP
leadership in the process

- TB communication is an integral part of GFATM
round 4 TB grant - Consultant (Ms. Irina Zatusevski) visited Georgia
In June 2005 - Conduct situation analysis
- Elaborate an IEC Plan
- KAP study results conducted by MSCI and Merlin
6Three main objectives of TB communication within
the GFATM project
- Increase public TB alertness, knowledge on
benefits of timely detection, full and correct
treatment of TB - Decrease stigmatization of TB patients and their
families - Increase DOTS strategy awareness for health
workers and improve coordination between PHC and
TB services

treatment adherence
- Position of IEC specialists at NTP was created
- PHC doctors and nurses is provided with the TB
training - Interpersonal communication is included in the
training curriculum for TB doctors, nurses and
PHC staff - Video clips were developed and broadcasted on TV
- Radio clips were developed and broadcasted
- Different sort of TB materials were developed
and distributed - Hot-line at NTP was created
- TB day is commemorated

- Treatment success rate in 2006 72.3
- Default rate decreased till 13.5
- Case detection rate 110 (preliminary data)
