Purpose
  • To convene nurses across the state and
    stakeholders across the health care delivery
    continuum to address nursing workforce issues and
    issues regarding the value of nursing.
  • Held in conjunction with the Annual Wyoming
    Nurses Association Meeting

Updates from 2nd Summit groups
  • WCNNE re-organizing to become active
  • A Nursing Council has been formed to advise the
    WY Dept of Employment on implementation of a
    study of demand for nursing in the state (funded
    in the last Legislative session).
  • The Wyoming Community Foundation has agreed to
    serve as the primary applicant for a RWJ proposal
    to develop a Partners in Wyoming Nursing Center
    proposal to be discussed during round tables
    later in the Summit

Updates continued
  • One LPN program w/ 16 (8 in Kemmer 8 in
    Evanston) students has started this past year and
    a second program will be opening in January 2007
    in Powell.
  • Also three different institutions Powell Valley
    Health Care, Cheyenne LTC and Cheyenne Regional
    Medical Center have all developed and implemented
    a program for CNAs to become RNs using an online
    courses and a clinical faculty provided by the
    institution.
  • S. Howard reported that the Wyoming Recruitment
    posters for men and minorities in nursing are
    still in process but should be available within
    the next few months.

Round Tables- planning the proposal for RWJ
  • Participants reviewed a draft proposal and based
    on information during the Summit recommended
    revision of the proposal objectives as follows
  • Broaden proposal to include more than Long Term
    Care in the first couple objectives
  • Recognize Dept of Employment survey and build
    upon it

Proposal objectives continued
  • Incorporate CNAs, LPNs into objectives
  • Add an objective looking at Task analysis for RNs
    considering models of care, cost effectiveness
    potential delegation
  • Begin changing the work place based on what we
    already know
  • Continue to examine changing attitudes and
    student nurse experiences in long term care

Next Summit
  • Agreed to plan next Summit as this one was
    planned in conjunction with WNA
  • Leaders of different nursing organizations will
    again work together to plan conference.
