Agenda
Fishery management are policies that aim to
develop and maintain fishing activities in the
long-term. Technology fostered an important
fishery management program in Brazil using
satellites and automated systems. RASTRO is part
of such program.

  6. Future work

3
Context
  • Since 1999, the offshore fishery industry in
Brazil has invested in the quest for alternative
    deep-water commercial stocks
  • Example red crab and monkfish

4
Context
  • First Problem
  • Condition national fleet was not prepared to
    explore deep-water resources
  • How could the government and the industry develop
    actions to explore such resources?
  • Solution
  • Permit foreign rented vessels to enter Brazilian
    waters

5
Context
  • Second Problem
  • How to monitor and control such vessels
activities, under the penalty of extinguishing
    fishery stocks?
  • Solution
  • To create Fishery Management Policies aligned
with a National Program to allow the exploration
    of deep-water commercial stocks

6
Fishery Policies
  • National Program
  • Agreement between the Government and the
Universidade do Vale do Itajaí (Univali)
  • To develop a low-cost program but still
considering the lack of human resources and
    adequate infrastructure
  • Onboard Observers Policy
  • GEP Selection, Training and Monitoring
  • Rented Vessels Tracking Policy
  • G10 Internet based tracking system
