Parts of a Book
  • The table of contents list the titles of the
    units or chapters and the selections. It gives
    page numbers and is found at the front of the
    book.
  • The glossary, found at the back, gives meanings
    of important words used in the book. It is like
    a small dictionary.
  • The index, also found at the back, gives a list
    of topics and names.

Characters Setting
  • What are the two main settings of the story?
  • Who are the characters?
  • How does Lukes Dad act in the city? (in
    his room and the morning of the trip)
  • How does he act differently in the mountains?
    (on
    the trail, in the tent, in the forest)

Making Inferences
  • You make an inference about a character when you
    use your own life experiences and look for clues
    in the story that help you learn more about a
    characters feelings.
  • You must make inferences because the author does
    not always tell you everything about the
    characters.

Multiple-meaning words
  • A word can have more than one meaning.
  • The way the word is used in a sentence tells you
    which meaning is being referred to.
  • Sometimes the two meanings have different
    pronunciations.
  • Examples lead lead, park park, bear bear,
    light light, right right, etc...
