  • Landforms are features that make up the Earth's
surface. There are many kinds of landforms.
  • Some landforms are created by the action of wind,
water, and ice. This action physically changes
the Earth's surface by carving and eroding land
surfaces, carrying and depositing soil, sand and
    other debris.
  • Crustal movement and other tectonic activity
inside Earth create landforms mountains, faults,
    sinks, and volcanos.
  • Topographic maps and models are used to represent
landforms and help scientists better understand
    objects and processes.

4
Landforms
  • Plains large, flat areas which often have
thick, fertile soils and grassy meadows
  • Coastal plains stretch along coastal areas and
    are often called lowlands.
  • Interior plains are in the central part of a
    continent.
  • Plateaus flat, raised areas of land made up of
nearly horizontal rocks their edges rise steeply
    from the area around them.

5
A line of combines harvest a field of wheat on
Montanas Great Plains, which cover about
two-thirds of the state. Fertile soil makes the
region ideal for growing crops such as wheat, the
states leading agricultural crop.
6
Four corners region and Colorado Plateau
Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico und Utah.
7
Mountains
  • Folded mountains form when rock layers are
squeezed from opposite sides, causing the rock
layers to fold like a rug pushed up against the
    wall.
  • Forces within the Earth push the crust up to form
    upwarped mountains.
  • Fault-block mountains form when tilted blocks of
rock are separated by faults from the surrounding
    rock.
  • Layers of molten material pile up forming
    cone-shaped volcanic mountains.

Folded Mountains
This image shows a view of the Himalayan
Mountain belt in Pakistan, as viewed from an
orbiting space shuttle. The entire field of view
shows parallel ridges and valleys of folded
mountains. 4. In what direction was pressure
applied to create the Himalayan Mountains?
9
Upwarped mountains
  • Adirondack Mountains in NY

High peaks and sharp ridges.
