Four Eyes Are Better for Oneby Jennifer
Paull      Smack! The puck bounced off the goal
and flew in the opposite direction.     "What a
save!" Kevin exclaimed.     What luck, Fred
thought. He'd played the whole season on pure
luck, and they'd made it to the finals. What Fred
hadn't told anyone was that he couldn't see the
puck. He couldn't see anything at a
distance!     After the game, Fred told his mom
he couldn't see. She said he would have to go to
the eye doctor.     The next afternoon, they
visited the eye doctor. Fred dreaded the awful
newshe was nearsighted and needed glasses. The
glasses would be ready in one week.     The only
thought running through his head was how badly he
would be teased. "Freddy Four-eyes! Goalie in
glasses!" he imagined. He did not know any kids
his age who played hockey and wore glasses. Now
his dream of becoming a professional hockey
player was history. Professional hockey players
did not wear glasses. The thought of how his
friends would make fun of him left him
worried.
3
One week later, he placed the glasses on his
head and repeated, "It will all be okay. You're
still the greatest goalie. You're still an
awesome athlete." His mom loved the glasses. They
made him look smart. She dismissed his comment
that the team would tease him.      He slowly
climbed into the car after picking up the
glasses. They headed to the rink the
championship game against the Bolts was only
minutes away. Fear jabbed him in the stomach
again. He could barely breathe. He was so worried
about what his friends would say.     They
arrived as both teams gathered to take the ice.
Introductions were made so players knew each
other. Much to Fred's surprise the other team's
goalie wore glasses. As he met each Bolt, he
counted five players wearing glasses! Fred knew
that the Bolts were as good as his team. He felt
a little more confident when he saw how many
others wore glasses. Maybe it wouldn't be so
bad.     After the game his teammates screamed,
"Fred the Fabulous!" He had successfully saved
every shot on his goal. They beat the Bolts 3-0.
He saw each teammate smiling.     He was untying
his skates when his mom found him. She gave him a
hug and whispered, "So?"     "These glasses
really are great, Mom. I saw and saved every
shot!"
