8Florences parents were cross. They did not want
her to train as a nurse. Florence felt that this
was what God wanted her to do, so she went and
trained as a nurse.
9In 1853 the Crimean War started. There were
reports of terrible conditions in the
hospitals. Florence was asked to go and help
with the nurses she had been training in England.
10When she arrived Florence found the conditions
were awful. The wards were very dirty and there
were rats everywhere. Men were dying from
diseases they were catching in hospital. Florence
and her nurses cleaned the wards.
11The men started to get better, thanks to the
clean wards and good nursing. When she returned
home Florence was a heroine. She didnt want to
be famous and continued to write letters and
campaign for cleaner hospitals and better nursing
for patients.
Her campaigns meant that hospitals for smallpox
and imbecile children were built in Dartford.
