Title: Health Hazard Notations

1
Health Hazard Notations
2
This is a standard symbol used to disclose the
risks associated with materials.
Colored areas are designated as being 0, 1, 2, 3
or 4 (4 is the worst)
3
Health Hazard
0 for materials that pose no health hazard
(aggregates)
1 for materials that can cause significant
significant irritation
2 for materials that can cause termporary
incapacitation or residual injury
4
3 for materials (hydrofluoric acid, cement, lime)
that could cause serious or permanent injury
4 for materials (phosgene and methyl mercury)
that can be lethal
4
Flammability
0 for matls that will not burn
1 for matls that must be preheated to ignite
(asphalt)
2 for matls that must be moderately heated or
high ambient temperature before ignition can
occur (crude oil)
3
4 for matls which will rapidly or completely
vaporize at atmospheric pressure and normal
ambient temperature, or which are readily
dispersed in air and which will burn readily
3 for matls (liquids or solids) that can be
ignited under almost all ambient temperature
conditions (kerosene)
5
Reactivity Stability
0 normally stable, even under fire exposure
conditions, and not reactive with water
1 normally stable, but can become unstable at
elevated temp and pressures or which may react
vigorously with water. May change or decompose
with exposure to air, light or moisture (lime,
cement)
3 capable of detonation or explosive reaction but
requires a strong initiating source or reacts
explosively with water (ammonium nitrate)
2 readily undergoes violent chemical change at
elevated temp and pressure. May react violently
with water or may form potentially explosive
mixture with water.
3
4 readily capable of detonation or of
explosive decomposition at normal temp and
pressure, shock sensitive, explosive in water
(nitro)
6
Special
W reacts violently or in a dangerous manner with
water
D requires special disposal
COR acid, alkali or other materials that will
cause severe damage to living tissue
OX
OX yields oxygen to support combustion.
Possess radioactive hazards
