3Psalm 22 The Victorious Sufferer
- The first half of the psalm depicts a sufferer
(David) who is surrounded by his enemies and
feels forsaken by his God. - The second half expresses his joy after being
delivered from his trials.

- Jesus cried out v. 1 from the cross (Matt 2746),
as He expressed agony of body and soul. - The gospels give a brief historical record of
Jesus suffering, but in Psalm 22 we see Jesus
agony through His own eyes, including the
innermost thoughts of His heart.

- SUFFERER FEELS FORSAKEN BY GOD (221-21)
- GIVES A DESPONDENT CRY (1-2)
- v. 1) Why has God forsaken me? Why does He not
help me? - v. 2) Day night my cry is made... why does
God not hear? (The silence of a parent will
stimulate a child to cry louder, cf. Mt. 1522-23)

- SUFFERER FEELS FORSAKEN BY GOD (221-21)
- TURNS HIS THOUGHTS FROM DESPONDENCY TO HOPE (3-5)
- v. 3) God is holy, enthroned on praises. Even
when it seems that God disregards our prayers of
faith, He is to be worshiped. - v. 4) Our fathers trusted in Him He delivered
them, starting in Egyptian bondage. - v. 5) They cried to Him, He did not
disappoint them.

- SUFFERER FEELS FORSAKEN BY GOD (221-21)
- BUT HE CANNOT IGNORE HIS PRESENT TORMENT (6-8)
- v.6) Reduced to feel like a worm
- v.7) The object of reproach, despised
- v.8) Ridiculed taunted by those who mock his
trust in God (Matt 2739-43)

- HIS FAITH IN GOD COMES BACK INTO FOCUS (9-11)
- v.9-10) He acknowledges that God has been with
him since birth. - v.11) He looks to God as his only helper (when
in trials, remember back)

- HE DESCRIBES HIS ENEMIES SUFFERING (12-18)
- His enemies (troubles without)
- v.12) They surround him like strong bulls of
Bashan (wild, untamable) - v.13) Their mouths open like a raging roaring
lion (roar after devouring prey)

- HE DESCRIBES HIS ENEMIES SUFFERING (12-18)
- His suffering (troubles within)
- v.14) Poured out like water, bones out of
joint Heart like wax, melted within. - v. 15) Strength dried up, tongue clinging to
jaw brought to dust of death.

- HE DESCRIBES HIS ENEMIES SUFFERING (12-18)
- His affliction (torture)
- v.16) encircle him like wild dogs, gang of
evildoers pierced his hands feet - v.17) He can count all his bones they feast
their eyes on him without pity

- HE DESCRIBES HIS ENEMIES SUFFERING (12-18)
- His affliction (torture)
- v.18) They divide his garments, cast lots for
his clothing (a form of mockery, as if to say,
Its all over for you. Matt 2735)

- HIS FINAL CRY (19-21)
- For God to NOT be far away
- v.19) To be his strength, hasten help
- v.20) To deliver his life from the sword, his
life (soul) from the power of the dog - v.21) To save him from the lions mouth horns
of wild oxen

- THEN HE MAKES A SUDDEN DECLARATION THAT GOD HAS
ANSWERED HIM! - v. 21
- You have answered me.

- SUFFERER DELIVERED BY GOD (2222-31)
- Consider Jesus resurrection, His ascension into
heaven, the proclamation of the gospel and the
answering of that call.

- GOD IS PRAISED! (22-25)
- v.22) After he sees his deliverance, he praises
God with his whole heart, proclaiming His name
(power, faithfulness love) to his brethren. - v.23 In the middle of the assembly he calls on
them to praise God also to honor Him to stand
in awe of Him.

- SUFFERER DELIVERED BY GOD (2222-31)
- GOD IS PRAISED! (22-25)
- v.24) God has NOT despised his affliction God
has NOT hidden His face from him, but rather
heard his cry (what about Jesus cry on the
cross?) - v.25) The sufferer will praise God pay his
vows in the great assembly, before them that fear
Him.

- SUFFERER DELIVERED BY GOD (2222-31)
- GOD WILL BE WORSHIPED! (26-31)
- v.26) By the poor (in spirit), those who
seek the Lord (the character of those in the
kingdom) - - They shall eat be satisfied
- - They shall praise Him forever

- SUFFERER DELIVERED BY GOD (2222-31)
- GOD WILL BE WORSHIPED! (26-31)
- vs.27-28) By people from the ends of the earth
(the expansion of His kingdom) - Who remember return to the Lord
- All families of the nations (Gentiles) will bow
down before Him - For the kingdom is the Lords, and He is the
Ruler among the Nations.

- SUFFERER DELIVERED BY GOD (2222-31)
- GOD WILL BE WORSHIPED! (26-31)
- v.29) By the prosperous the dead (all men
are subject to Him will confess Him Phil.
211) - The prosperous (saved) will eat, and will worship
Him. - The dead (lost) shall bow before Him

- GOD WILL BE WORSHIPED! (26-31)
- vs.30-31) By the generations to come (you
me) - A posterity (those who come after) shall serve
him. For men will tell of what God has done.
People yet to be born will hear of Gods justice
(Acts 239).

- SUMMARY
- David learned what Jesus always knew (2221)
- God does not forsake his servants. He answers
their prayers (Luke 2239-44).

- SUMMARY
- I will declare Your Name (2222)
- Never let circumstances determine our faith. The
writer of Hebrews quotes this verse and applies
it to Jesus our high priest (Heb 29-18). Jesus
declared the name of God before, on after the
cross. Let us declare His name as we encounter
every circumstance in life no matter how
difficult.
