How old are we?
8
Suburb specific population growth decline
  • Areas along the Kirrawee Bonnet Bay belt and
west of Woronora River show most significant
decline in population over the last 5 years
  • Oyster Bay -10.1, Bangor -9.9 Kirrawee -7.9
  • Eastern areas eg suburbs adjoining Port Hacking,
    Taren Point, Sylvania/Waters Cronulla have
achieved positive population growth, probably due
to the amount of larger blocks significant
amounts of infill subdivision medium density
    development that has occurred
  • Gymea Bay - 13.2, Sylvania - 6.9 Miranda
    4.4

9
What does all this mean?
  • Population has plateaued, 0.3 growth since
    2001.
  • Stats clearly highlight a rapidly ageing
population attributed to Baby Boomers, declining
    fertility rates, increasing life expectancy
    improved health of older people.
  • Generation Ys (to 26 yrs) pursuing higher
    education, however, ageing population are
retiring, not enough young people coming
through to cover skilled jobs (skills shortage).
  • Substantial of home based businesses
  • Xxxxx
  • xxxxx

10
Volunteering
  • Volunteering
  • 28,082 or 17.3 of shire residents are
volunteers, compared with 14.8 for the Sydney
    Statistical Region.
  • Anecdotally, volunteers are harder to get,
    particularly skilled workers to undertake
    financial roles in community organisations.
    Caring Centres quite often volunteer
co-ordinators are older than the clients they are
    supporting.
  • Some opportunities for Corporate volunteers eg.
Toyota (social responsibility) need to be
developed, however, not an easy task in light of
    current economic conditions.
  • Trends refer to ABS Report
  • Typical NSW Volunteer (ABS Voluntary Work,
    State Tables 2000)
  • 4102.0 Australian Social Trends, 2008
  • (Regular volunteers 35-44 y/o women 32,
    45-54 y/o men 24)
  • Volunteering v innovation (Glenn to comment)

11
Marketing Sutherland Rotary
  • Personally approach target market
  • Corporate Sponsors
  • eg. Toyota
  • Announcement of benefit recipients annually, in
    advance
