1
BRADFIELD COLLEGE
  • TRAFFIC INVESTIGATION

By Jay Jung, Eliot Brown and James Balfour-Evans
2
Introduction
  • At Bradfield, many students cross the roads
everyday. There is a potential danger towards the
students, because the cars go faster than the
restriction (30mph), and in the dark, the people
are not visible enough to the driver.

3
What do you think?
4
Weve carried out a survey in order to find out
what other people think about the road problems.
Our results were interesting
  • Over 90 of you agree that cars go too fast
through the campus going at an average speed of
    40mph.
  • Over half of you think that you are not visible
enough especially at night and that they are
never completely safe whilst crossing the road.
  • Over 95 of you think that there should be road
lights during the night some even say there
should be traffic wardens at certain rush hours.
  • ALL of you agree that some sort of traffic lights
and pelican crossings which work at rush hours
    should be put in place.
  • 73 think that the road from the crossroads to
chapel (on left) should be wider.
  • 9 of you think that there shouldnt be more
    warning signs on the road.
  • Over 60 of people think that there are too many
cars travelling too fast at rush hours.

5
What does it all mean?
  • This means that most people within the school
share roughly the same opinion about fast driving
    through the school campus.
  • The fact that everyone thinks it doesnt help us,
so we need to take action.
  • In doing so we can convince the Council to help
    us in our situation
  • but what exactly could we do?

6
Interview with the Headmaster
  • We asked the Headmaster of Bradfield College to
    see what he thinks
  • He agreed with most of our opinions and gave us a
few ideas of what we can do to help the traffic.
  • Here are some of the things he said

7
  • What do you think is the best option to try to
    resolve this problem?
  • I would say that a permanent speed indication
device, both going up the hill and towards
Southend, which would flash you a smiley face or
a sad face depending on your speed. Also, if we
could make the school signs flash, it may have
    more impact.
  • What would you think if Bradfield had either a
pelican crossing (which works at rush hours), a
Zebra crossing or neither? Of course, if we had
this option, we would have to have some form of
    street lighting.
  • A good idea, although these are probably the
safest option it is surreal. The Government would
never accept this, because Bradfield is on a
hill, it costs too much, were not a priority and
itll cause a traffic jam in Bradfield.

  • What can pupils do to raise our concerns with the
local Council and can we be more aware?
  • There is nothing wrong with a petition or writing
a letter, in terms of awareness. I think that
parents who live nearby should pressure local
    Councils.
  • Two people who answered our questionnaire
suggested that we should have a fluorescent strip
we can stick to our blazers. What do you think of
    this idea?
  • Currently, we are working on some form of
sweatshirt, to be worn in the evenings of the
Michaelmas Term. This would be bright coloured
and there would probably be a fluorescent strip
    on it.

9
What can we do about it?
  • Either put road lights around the campus.
  • Give everyone some kind of fluorescent jacket, so
we can always be seen at night.
  • Put more school signs up to try to make drivers
more aware that they should slow down.
  • Put a permanent speed indication device (which
smiles if you go at the speed limit or slower or
    frowns if you go over).
