  • Why was it undertaken
  • Scale and Methodology
  • What activities are included/excluded
  • How you access the Survey results
  • Introduction to Active People Diagnostic

3
What is the Active People Survey
  • A survey of aged 16 adults
  • Participation in Sport and physical activity
  • Community
  • Sport Specific
  • Asked people
  • What they did over the previous 28 days
  • How often they did it
  • Intensity
  • Volunteering
  • Club membership
  • Coaching
  • Competition
  • Demographic information age, gender, ethnicity,
    car ownership, income etc

4
Why?
5
Why measure participation?
  • Government objective to increase participation in
physical activity by an average of 1 a year to
    2020
  • Game Plan (2002)
  • Wanless Report (2004)
  • Sport England strategic direction

6
  • The Framework for Sport in England interpreted
    the Game Plan target as
  • The percentage of adults participating in at
least 30 minutes moderate intensity sport and
    active recreation (including recreational
walking) on 3 or more days a week

7
Why?
  • Able to measure activity levels over the
    previous 28 days
  • Allows us to identify baseline information
  • Identify hot and cold spots
  • Identify low participation groups
  • Monitor progress against our targets
  • Support Local Authorities

8
Scale of the Survey
9
  • The Active People Survey is the largest single
research study ever undertaken by telephone in
Europe (363,724 completed interviews in England)
  • Ipsos MORI had over a 120 interviewers working
six-hour shifts, seven days a week for fifty
    weeks, completing a 1,000 interviews a day for a
    year.
  • Minimum of 1,000 completed interviews per Local
Authority (at least 500 interviews in the summer
and 500 in the winter take into account
    seasonality effects on participation rates)

10
  • Contacted approximately 1 in 12 households in
    England over the year
  • The survey started in October 2005, and was
    completed in October 2006.
  • Capable of measuring statistically valid change
of 3 to 4 over 3 years for every local authority
    in England
  • Survey results are accessed through the Active
People Diagnostic, - an internet based
    reporting and analysis web site.

11
Methodology
  • Interviews distributed evenly across each Local
    Authority
  • Random Digit Dialling
  • Next Birthday rule to ensure representative
    sample
  • Postcodes and address collected for accurate
    allocation of respondent to postcode

12
What is the difference between Active People
Survey and Taking Part?
Both Surveys have some identical questions e.g.
those which feed into the KPI for participation
Taking Part National Culture Sport
Survey 27,000 adult survey results Culture
wide survey for 3 years Childrens survey for
11-15 year olds 30-40 minute household
interview Provides national level
data Attitudinal questions, such as Levers
(what would make you do activity more often),
motivations and barriers, reasons for not doing
activity
Active People Survey 363,000 completed
interviews Telephone interview 15-18 minutes
questionnaire Continuous for 1 year Provide
local and regional level data, I.e. local
authority level data

What is Active People Diagnostic?
  • Active People Diagnostic is a sophisticated
online reporting and analysis tool which will
enable partners (LAs, CSPs, NGBs, PCTs) to
    view survey results
  • Four tiers of analysis
  • Tier 1 Key Performance Indicators
  • Tier 2 Other Performance Indicators
  • Tier 3 Cross Tabulation
  • Tier 4 - Comparison

Active People Survey measuring change
National and Regional change of 1 is
statistically measurable on an annual basis
05/06
06/07
07/08
08/09
09/10
10/11
11/12
12/13
Baseline
No survey
Ability to measure change for larger CSPs. No LA
measure of change.
First ability to measure target change for all
CSPs. LA change can be measured using cumulative
average of 07/08 and 08/09 surveys against 05/06
baseline
Measure LA change against 05/06 baseline only
Measure LA change against 05/06 baseline only
Measure LA change against 07/09 baseline only
Measure LA change against 08/10 baseline only
Annual survey of 500 sample per LA
Cumulative sample of 1,000 per LA
NB years refer to survey period, for example
07/08 is Oct 07- Oct 08
