CHAPTER 7
  • LIFE IN THE TERRITORY

2
Lesson 1 A FREE TERRITORY
  • Railways were built to connect the east coast to
the west coast because people wanted a faster and
    better route across the country.
  • Three reasons to make Nebraska a territory
  • The U.S. would set up a government and buy land
    from Indians.
  • Settlers would be allowed to move to Nebraska.
  • Railroad companies could use the land to build
their railroad from the east and west.
  • The slavery issue in the Nebraska territory had
to be solved before the government would consider
    making a new territory.
  • The Kansas Nebraska Act---said that the people in
each territory could decide for themselves
whether their territory would allow slaves or
    not.
  • Underground Railroad---a secret system to help
    slaves escape.

LESSON 2 TERRITORY IMPROVEMENTS
  • Road ranches helped the settlers in 3 ways
  • Provided supplies
  • Provided services like wagon repairs
  • Provided a place to stay overnight
  • The Pony Express---a system that carried mail on
    horseback across the country.
  • The Pony Express ended because
  • The company did not make enough money to stay in
    business.
  • Faster ways of sending messages and mail soon
    came along.
  • The telegraph---an invention that helped speed up
communication. It sent messages across electric
    wires.
  • Samuel Morse---the man who invented the
    telegraph.

LESSON 3 THE IRON HORSE
  • Civil War---when people from the same country
    fight against each other.
  • Arguments over slavery caused the north and the
south states fight against each other.
  • Two railroad companies built a railroad across
the center of the Unites States.
  • The Sioux and the Cheyenne began destroying the
tracks because they wanted to protect their land.
  • Frank North from Nebraska hired the Pawnee to
    serve as scouts.
  • Pawnee Scouts ---were hired to protect the
    railroad and the rail workers.
  • The railroad changed the way many people
    traveled.
  • People could now travel
  • 1. In any kind of weather all year long
  • 2. faster and farther and carry more with them
  • 3. ship larger goods to the west

5
  • 3 types of early transportation in the Nebraska
    territory.
  • Stagecoach---a type of covered wagon with seats
that was pulled by horses. They were not very
comfortable and only moved at 5 miles per hour.
  • Railroads---allowed people to travel much faster
and farther than before. Trains could travel at
    20 mph.
  • Steamboats---large boats that took travelers,
business people, and supplies to towns/cities
    along the Missouri River.
