Today
  • Today, we are going to learn about the magical
    world of verb tenses.
  • Verb tenses let us know when the action happens.
  • There are six different tenses you have to choose
from, as well as six progressive formsbut we
will get into all of this later
  • Today, we are going to focus in on the three main
    tensespast, present, and future.

5
Past Tense
  • A verb is in the past tense when it expresses an
action (or existence) that is completed at a
    particular time in the past.
  • Add ed to most verbs to form the past tense.
  • Example Galileo, an Italian
  • scientist, was the first scientist
  • to use a telescope. This only
  • landed him in hot water with the
  • Flat Earth Society.

6
Future Tense
  • A verb is in the future tense when it expresses
    action that will take place.
  • Add the helping verbs will or shall in front of
    the verb.
  • Example I will eat
  • pizza today.

7
Present Tense
  • A verb is in the present tense when it expresses
an action that is happening now or that happens
    continually or regularly.
  • Example I ace tests
  • sometimes, but not often
  • enough.

8
When to use Present Tense
  • Present Action I want pizza right now! (This is
    happening right at this moment.)
  • Action that happens over and over I eat pizza
almost every day. (This is continuing from the
past, through the present, and into the futureso
    use a present verb.)

9
Present Tense
  • Present tenses are also used for other things
  • Scientific facts and other things that are always
    true
  • Eating 25 pizzas a day is not good for you.
  • Headlines
  • Local Kid Explodes from Pizza Overload

10
Present Tense
  • Sometimes the present tense is used in place of
    the future tense
  • Tomorrow I leave for a special hospital to try to
    overcome my pizza addiction.
  • In book reports, you should report the ending of
the book in present tense, as if you are reading
    it.
  • In the final scenes of Pizza Panic, the hero of
the story is cured of his pizza addiction and
lives happily ever after, never again craving
    mozzarella and pepperoni.

11
Be Consistent With Tenses
  • Think clearly! Dont change tenses in a
    sentence.

12
Now, time to try it out!
  • Identify the tense of the underlined verb(s).
  • Mom fussed at me for trashing my room.
  • When I was a kid, I swung every day on an old
    tire swing.
  • I will wish for a new pony.
  • Adam broke the dish when he tossed it to Jenna
who was standing at the sink.
  • Mrs. Cox likes aluminum cans.
  • I worked for three hours and the assignment was
    finally completed.
  • Todays headline reads Local Kid Wins
    Scholarship From Pizza Hut.

13
Remember
  • The past tense of a verb expresses an action that
    has already happened.
  • The future tense of a verb expresses an action
that will take place in the future.
  • The present tense of a verb expresses an action
that is happening now or happens repeatedly.

14
ARE YOU READY?
15
  • A verb is like the engine on a car it moves the
    sentence.
  • A verb is a word that shows action or a state of
    being.
  • An action verb is a word that expresses action.
  • An action verb can be mental (in the brain) or
    physical (the body).
  • Using vivid verbs is like having a higher powered
engine. The stronger the verb is, the more
    descriptive the sentence is.
  • A direct object is a noun or pronoun that
receives the action of the verb. It answers the
    question whom or what.
  • A transitive verb has a direct object.
  • An intransitive verb is independent of a direct
    object.

16
  • An indirect object is a noun or pronoun in the
predicate that answers the question to whom? for
whom? to what? or for what?.
  • An indirect object will always fall between the
    verb and the direct object.
  • An indirect object will never be alone. It
always hangs out with a direct object.
  • When the indirect object follows a preposition,
it becomes the object of a preposition and is no
    longer considered an indirect object.
  • A linking verb links the subject of a sentence
with the noun or adjective in the predicate.
  • A predicate noun is a noun in the predicate that
tells who or what the subject is.
  • A predicate adjective tells what the subject is
    like.
  • A singular subject hangs out with a singular
    verb.
  • A plural subject hangs out with a plural verb.
  • Pay attention to the subject so you know which
    one to use.
