    going concern in the Summer of 2000
  • It acts as a profit centre for the MNAA

The Story of the Métis Business Development
Corporation
  • The Vision is attributable to the development of
    an Economic Development Strategy that was
    completed June, 2001
  • Part of the strategy includes a Micro Business
    Training Centre, Business Incubator, EDOs for
    each zone, continued development of the Riverview
    Farms project, Casino, an Oil Gas company, and
    a Micro Angel Investment Fund

Zone Economic Development Officers
  • Main tasks of the Zone Edos are wealth creation
    and wealth distribution within their particular
    zones
  • Facilitate the process of economic development by
    working with local industry to determine
    potential business ventures
  • Each EDO reports to their respective Zone
    Presidents and Vice Presidents as well as head
    office situated in the city of Edmonton

Micro Business Training Centre
  • Urban focus
  • The training centre offers a self employment
    program through an Edmonton Office
  • Primarily for Metis Nation members in Zone 4,
    however seats are available for other zones,
    Metis Settlements and First Nation clients
  • 26 week program, 10 week in class room training
    with after care follow-up sessions
  • Rural focus
  • Plans underway to offer the self employment
    program in the five remaining zones
  • Mobile facilitators or facilitators from the area
    will be hired
  • Would like each zone to commit to funding 6 to 15
    students per zone per year
  • Will conduct one-on-one sessions with very remote
    locals or communities

  • Infiniti Business Training Services is a division
    of the Metis Business Development Corporation
  • The Metis Business Development Corporation is a
    wholly owned subsidiary of the Metis Nation of
    Alberta

  • 11 students began the training, May, 2001, 10
    completed the program
  • Eight are currently in business

    particular Metis Nation of Alberta Zone EAS for
    living allowance and Zone office for tuition,
    Ottenow for First Nations, and STI for Metis
    Settlements
  • Further intakes slated for January 20, 2003 and
    March 31, 2003

Micro Angel Investment Fund
  • Most financial institutions in the province of
    Alberta require a down payment to start a
    business
  • The down payment is usually in the form of cash
    at 10 to 20 percent of total project cost
  • Many beginning entrepreneurs only have a small
    portion of the start-up cash equity required
  • We would incorporate a business with the
    entrepreneur and invest in shares in the company
    for a part ownership of the company in exchange
    for cash

Concluding Thoughts
  • Of the 91 applicants Interviewed and deemed
    suitable, 48 or 53 were accepted into the
    program
  • 40 of the 48 or 83 have completed or are in the
    process of completing the program
  • 33 of the 48 or 69 of those accepted are in
    business or are in the process of establishing
    their businesses
