About Ants

• Over 10,000 species of ants
• A few species of ants hole up
• Reproduce by laying eggs
• Three parts of the body head, thorax, abdomen
• Live in colonies and are social insects next to
  bees and wasps
• The colony or workers are childless females

Reproduction Cycle

• Males are produced only during mating seasons
• At this time male and females are born with
  wings, The females are future queens and the
  males will die after mating
• Males (life span is 2 to 3 days) and females
  reproduce in the air
• Reproduce by laying eggs its take between 5
  and 7 days
• In spring , summer, and fall you can see queens
  mating

The Queen

• Biggest ant in colony
• She gives her colony a different smell
• Takes care of the first group of ants
• Can live up to 15 years and only needs to mate
  once to lay millions of eggs
• Also produces some think( a pheromone )that
  lets the workers know she is healthy every month
• Fact Some colonies have more than one queen

The Ladies Social Communication Skills

• Ants communicate with each other through taps
  of the antennae and smell
• Chemical feels chemical feels are used to
  taste and smell as the nose and mouth to humans
  .Ex. To transport food back to the nest, Also if
  nest is worried a chemical is created, at fast
  speed, to warn colony of danger. Sometimes humans
  can smell this in larger colonies

Relationship between Ants and Plants

• Important to break up seeds they crop for food
• They turn over and air the earth more 5x more
  than earthworms
• The thorn tree ant lives in a tree that is
  covered with thorns, and they bore holes in the
  thorns to make homes. In return, the ant protects
  the tree from the leaf cutter ant who destroy the
  vegetation of the tree
• Plants give food for the ants

• The ants kill the rats that wait in our gardens
  that may cause diseases
• Ants help the environment by taking unwanted
  plants
