1
The Classical Gods
  • And other fun stuff!

2
Where do we get all this stuff from?
  • Homerblind poet, wrote Iliad and Odyssey
  • HesiodGreek poet (700BCE), wrote Theogeny and
    Works and Days
  • Tragedians Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripidies.
  • VirgilRoman poet, wrote Aeneid
  • OvidRoman poet, wrote Metamorphosis and other
    poems.

3
  • There were a bunch of other poets and works .
  • Those are the major players where we get most of
    the information.
  • Other texts fill in the blanks, but they arent
as thick with the good stuff.

4
  • War of the Gods!
  • When we last left the struggling sons and
daughters of Cronus and Rhea, Zeus had
successfully rescued his siblings from the
dyspeptic digestive system of their cruel, power
hungry father. But Daddys angry, and he wont
let that pesky prophesy come true

5
Two armies
  • ZeusHe saved his siblings, hell defeat his
    father!
  • Command Center Mount Olympus
  • Zeuss siblings were quick to join Zeus in his
    battle.
  • AtlasTitan appointed as general for Cronus
  • Command Center Mount Othrys
  • Not all of the Titans agreed to battle Cronuss
    rebellious children.

6
Nobody loves Cronus.
  • None of the Titanesses (lady Titans) joined him
    in the fray.
  • Oceanus, Cronuss older brother and god of
    rivers, refused to fight
  • Helios (a.k.a. the sun), Cronuss nephew,
    refused to fight
  • Prometheus and Iapetus, nephews to Cronus and
    brothers to Atlas, joined Zeus.

7
Why did Prometheus and his brother join Zeus?
  • Prometheus convinced his dim-witted brother to
    join with him.
  • Prometheus knows the future.
  • Why be on the losing side if you know who will
    win?

8
  • For ten long years, they battled. Everyday they
fought in harsh and incredible warfare. Zeuss
army won some conflicts Cronuss army won
others. It seemed as though the colossal war of
    wars may never end

9
A Little Help from Grandma.
  • Gaia told Zeus about her ugly kids that were
locked away in Tartarus by Cronus.
  • The Cyclopes and the Hecatoncheires could be very
    helpful in the battle.
  • They were guarded by the dreaded Campeguardian
    of these powerful monsters!
  • Hey! No problem! Zeus took out Campe and freed
    his uncles.

10
  • The Cyclopes gave their enormous strength and
    built
  • lightening
  • thunder
  • earthquakes
  • a trident
  • a helmet of invisibility

The Hecto-whoever-they-are hurled giant stones at
Mt. Othrys with their one-hundred hands!
11
A Fool-Proof Plan of Victory!
  • One brother will steal Cronuss weapons using the
    helmet.
  • The other brother will distract Cronus with the
    trident.
  • The Cyclopes and Hecto-Hands will rain boulders
    upon Mt. Othrys!
  • While distracted, Zeus will blast Cronus with
    lightening!

12
Victory!
  • Zeus wins!
  • Zeus wins!
  • Zeus wins!
  • Zeus wins!
  • Zeus wins!
  • Zeus wins!
  • Zeus wins!

Zeus wins! Zeus wins! Zeus wins! Zeus wins! Zeus
wins! Zeus wins! Zeus wins!
Zeus wins! Zeus wins! Zeus wins! Zeus wins! Zeus
wins! Zeus wins! Zeus wins!
13
Zeus as Punisher and Benefactor
  • Titans sent to Tartarus! Bad Titans!
  • Atlas, the commander, sentenced to hold up
    heavens for all eternity!
  • Allies, Titanesses, and other neutral players
    were rewarded!
  • Cronus either died or landed in Tartarus.
  • If Cronus ended up in Tartarus, why
did Atlas have to spend eternity
    holding up the heavens?
