Title: Are You Right For a Career in Pipefitting

1
Are You Right For a Career in Pipefitting ?
  • Am I interested in how things work and how to
    make things work?
  • Am I excited by problems that need solutions
and am I usually capable of coming up with
    creative ideas?
  • Am I prepared to pass an aptitude test, based on
    mechanical reasoning, spatial relationships and
    numerical reasoning?

2
  • Am I prepared to attend apprentice school for
eight hours, every two weeks, and 26 weeks a year
for five years, while being employed by a piping
    contractor?
  • Am I interested in going beyond the basics to
upgrade my skills with journeyman training, to
take opportunities in technological training, to
move into management ranks, or eventually, if I
choose, into owning and operating my own company?

3
  • Am I prepared to invest the time and effort in a
career that spells prestige, satisfaction and a
    very good income?
  • If you answered YES to most or all of the
questions, you should be talking about a
pipefitting career with your school counselor,
with employing mechanical contractors, or with a
tradesmen or officials of Pipefitters Local 636.
Youll find all of them most helpful in your
    career quest.

4
As a 636 Pipefitter, Youll Have a Real Career.
  • Whats more, as an important part of the
    construction industry, pipefitting is well
respected for its many contributions to
everyones health and well being. Pipefitters
are paid well, too, with some journeymen earning
a more than comfortable living after just a few
    years on the job.

5
As a 636 Pipefitter, Youll Have a Real Career.
  • There are many good reasons to pursue a career as
a union Pipefitter. For one thing, its
interesting work, where youll never be bored.
Every day is different and challenging, and
getting the job done right is always deeply
    satisfying.

6
Want Does A Pipefitter Do?
  • Basically, Pipefitters cut bend and join
pipes. Working on large industrial piping
systems that carry steam, gases, and chemicals to
supply power, heating and refrigeration, they
work from blueprints and drawings indoors,
outdoors, in homes, hospitals, shopping centers,
in every kind of structure from skyscraper to
tunnel, on new construction and maintenance and
    remodeling projects.

7
  • Most Pipefitters work for mechanical
contractors so called, because they are the
companies who take responsibility for the
mechanical operations of a building. That
includes heating air conditioning, and the flow
    of liquids and gases.
  • As a member of Local 636, you will be a part
of the United Association of Journeymen and
    Apprentices of the Plumbing Pipefitting
    Industry the UA. This international
organization has over a 100 year history in
fighting for higher work standards, promoting
better working conditions, and sponsoring the
    finest apprentice and journeymen training
    available anywhere.

8
  • As a union Pipefitter you will be a trained
professional, having come through a thorough
    five-year apprentice program sponsored by
    Pipefitters, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning
Service Local 636 of the United Association.
  • That adds up to thousands of hours of training
that prove you have the talent, the knowledge and
the skill to perform a most important job in one
of the most significant industries in today's
    economy.

Classroom Training To Help You Be The Best There
Is
  • As an apprentice at the Pipefitting
Industry Training Center, youll attend classes
for eight hours every two weeks total of 1000
hours of classroom training over your five years
that can put you among the leaders in the
    construction industry.
  • This all starts with a 40hour orientation
program on safety, your UA heritage and the
    subject of tool use.

26
  • Once into the curriculum, youll study high
purity piping systems, the pharmaceutical and
computer chip industries, as well as computer
assisted drawing (CAD). Youll discover the
    techniques of mechanical drawing, blueprint
reading and welding (all apprentices will be
exposed to welding theory and the types of
    welding procedures)..

27
  • And you will dig into industrial controls,
refrigeration and air conditioning systems, steam
and hydronic heating systems, and commercial and
    residential mechanical systems.
  • A key part of the service apprentice
training will include a Service Program, where
youll learn about servicing and maintenance of
air conditioning, compressors and HVAC systems.

28
  • Plus, youll become expert in codes and
code issues affecting the industry, as well as
the important areas of safety and safety
    training.
  • In short, youll learn the cutting edge
technologies youll need for success in the years
    ahead.
  • Then, once youve completed your
    apprenticeship, youll become a full-fledged
journeyman pipefitter, with the equivalent of a
masters degree from any university, and be able
to command the respect and good earnings that
    come with your professional status.

29
  • Indeed, with the help of your union, you
will most likely step into a job thats just
waiting for you, with no searching on your part.

30
Youll Be Part of A Tradition of Excellence More
Than A Century Old
  • When you complete your apprentice program at
the Pipefitting Industry Training Center, youre
ready to tell the world youre a pipefitting
professional and a member of Pipefitters Local
    636.
  • And even though youve already earned up to
200,000 total while learning for five years,
youll be ready to command the 60,000-plus
annual income that the union Pipefitters make.

31
  • Also, after 30 years on the job, youll
have a million dollar annuity and an additional
pension plan with guaranteed benefits during your
lifetime with liberal health insurance programs
(health, dental, eye-glass benefits). It wasnt
always that way, though. Over 100 years ago,
when the United Association of Plumbers and
Pipefitters was founded, the standard workweek
was six 10 hour days at 3 per day.
  • But thanks to the dedication of the United
Association people including Local 636, which

32
  • was chartered by the UA in 1914 a shorter
work week, wage increases and fridge benefits
soon became realities. At the same time, basic
    jurisdictional rights to represent Pipefitters
exclusively in a given area were established.
  • As Local 636 grew, the eight hour day
became the standard and the 40-hour workweek the
rule. Today, our members are proud of these
    achievements.

33
  • And we look forward to being joined by
motivated, Talented sand trained young people,
dedicated to the principles and progress of our
past as we move into our future.
