An Average Day on the DigMay 3 - 28 / Monday -
Friday
  • 800 Rise and shine
  • 840 Leave for the site
  • 900 Arrive at the site, begin the day
  • 1215 Lunch
  • 1300 Back to work
  • 1700 Finish at the site, drive back to camp
  • 1730 Shower/Swim break
  • 1830 Dinner
  • 1930 Lithic and bone washing and workshops
  • 2100 Free time in the evening

Team Rotation
  • There are 4 main parts to the excavation at this
    site
  • Excavation at the site
  • Surveying the area around the site
  • Processing the material recovered
  • Building a database and importing all data into a
    GIS
  • In teams of 3 you will rotate throughout the
    month working in each of these areas
  • Each team will be responsible for the completion
    of all of their assigned tasks and will be graded
    on these tasks

Application Procedure
  • Those interested in the field school must fill
    out a series of application and waiver forms
  • General application form
  • Transcripts
  • Letter of reference
  • Short essay on why they wish to participate in
    the project
  • Medical form
  • Waiver form
  • 50 dollar application fee
  • The application and medical forms, along with the
    essay and application fee are due on Monday,
    March 29, 2004
  • The Selection Committee will meet soon thereafter

Course Requirements and Assessment
  • Arky 1000 (or equivalent)
  • Registration
  • Only those accepted to the field school will be
    able to register for Arky 3300 Southern Alberta
  • Once all fees have been paid you name will be
    sent to the registrars office
  • Grades for the course are assessed on
  • Field work, note books, assignments and a final
    examination
  • Participation, work ethic and team work
  • Hard work and team work

Costs
  • Tuition
  • One summer session courses /- 450
  • Room and Board
  • Cost for accommodations and food while working at
    the site 200
  • Showers and Swimming
  • Showers at the Taber pool are 1.00 each day
  • Swimming is 3.50 (if you buy a 10 swim pass)
  • Books and Equipment
  • 50 (Note book, Marshaltown trowel etc.)
  • Total Estimated Costs 720 (including tuition)

Risks, Safety and Responsibility
  • Excavation risks
  • Hot and dry
  • Spiders, rattle snakes, flies and mosquitoes
  • Sharp equipment
  • Blowing sand
  • General risks
  • Students are responsible for their own personal
    safety
  • Students must conduct themselves accordingly and
    respect their fellow students

  • Working at a site is a lot of work but it is also
    a lot of fun
  • Learning how to excavate, survey and process the
    archaeological remains
  • Discovering the past
  • Working outside and being active
  • Working in a team
