Title: ABET TEI WORKSHOP

1
ABET TEI WORKSHOP
  • Trumpf, Inc., Farmington and Manchester
    Community College, CT

2
Introduction
  • ABET held a Technological Education Initiative
Workshop in Connecticut on September 10, 11, and
    12, 2004.
  • The theme was emerging technologies
  • The purpose was to promote Continuous Quality
    Improvement in Technological Education.

3
Trumpf, Inc., Farmington
4
Trumpf, Inc.
  • worldwide manufacturer of large CNC metal
    fabricating equipment and power tools
  • ISO 9000 certification and quality control
processes are a model for emulation in education.

5
Trumpf, Inc.
  • Laser Cutting cells from 250,000 to 650,00,
    feature fast changes.

6
Trumpf, Inc.
  • To make this CO2 laser resonator, they bought the
company that made the mirrors they needed.
  • They own many such small suppliers, whose
products they also market to others.

7
Trumpf, Inc.
  • They build these lasers for their cutting
machines, and market lasers separately as well.

8
Trumpf, Inc.
  • For laser cutting, assist gases are used to
blow the molten metal out of the kerf.
  • lt ¼ thick, compressed air superheats, plasma
    cuts up to 1,000 ipm.
  • gt ¼ up to 1 max., oxygen gives speeds of 500
    ipm. (see sample)
  • To avoid oxidizing, nitrogen is used at 300 ipm

9
Trumpf, Inc.
  • They employ about 50 engineers in a wide variety
of fields from optics to manufacturing.
  • They do not lay off experienced engineers and
    technologists, despite economy.
  • Currently unable to hire enough U.S. engineers
and technologists to meet rapidly increasing
    demand.

10
ABET TEI
  • ABET now identifies itself as a quality control
    organization for education.
  • the goal is Continuous Quality Improvement in
    Technological Education
  • This systematic process is used to develop the
parts of the technological education hierarchy
    shown in Figure 1.

ABET TEI
  • The Technology Criteria 2000 (TC2K)
    (http//www.abet.org/criteria.html ) defines
    Program Educational Objectives, Program Outcomes,
Assessment and Evaluation, and other criteria.
  • The institution must gather data measuring
outcomes and demonstrate that they are evaluating
and analyzing the data, and that they have used
the evaluation results to improve and further
develop the technological education program, as
    shown in Figure 2.

ABET TEI
  • The ABET TAC Criteria (2003) lists attributes
which An engineering technology program must
demonstrate that graduates have, such as a. an
appropriate mastery of the knowledge, techniques,
skills, and modern tools of their disciplines.
    (p. 5)

15
ABET TEI
  • The institution must gather data using valid
    assessment techniques.
  • surveys
  • questionnaires
  • interviews
  • commercial standardized exams
  • locally developed examinations
  • archival records, focus groups,
  • Simulations
  • Performance
  • Appraisals
  • External examiners
  • Oral examinations
  • Portfolios
  • Behavioral observations
  • (Prus and Johnson, 1994).

16
ABET TEI
  • Gloria Rogers Assessment Planning Resource
(2004) provides a flowchart, among many other
assessment aids, showing the steps in the process
    (Figure 3).
  • For more detailed and field-tested assessment
methods for science, engineering, and technology,
explore the FLAG site developed by the National
Institute for Science Educations College Level
    One Team (2004).

ABET TEI
  • ABET accreditation is key to the recognition of
    an engineering and/or engineering technology
    institution.
  • National Science Foundation funding,
  • US News and World Reports Top Engineering
    Colleges
  • Placement of graduates in demanding, high-quality
    organizations
  • Accreditation to the TC2K criteria with the
    attendant requirements for Outcomes Assessment
will provide the structure and the process to
    assure quality education.
