THE FIRST FIVE OUTINGS
  • AIM To introduce children and young people to
single handed sailing, in a safe environment.
  • GOAL Confident and Competent Stage One sailors
    in about five weeks
  • Be flexible when using these outing plans. It
may take more or less time to achieve the skills
required for stage one assessment, depending on a
number of factors such as weather conditions,
volunteers support, group age, rate of learning
    etc.
  • Pay attention to detail. Bad habits die hard, so
be aware of any you or others (volunteers or
sailors) may be picking up, and tactfully point
this out. It makes life easier in the long run,
avoiding the need for individuals to waste
    valuable time re-learning any skills.
  • Remember the importance of continuity. A
familiar face week in week out builds confidence
and trust, two key elements of learning.
  • Always remember the KISS technique Keep It
    Simple and Safe.

WHAT NEXT?
  • We are an RYA OnBoard centre, with a shared
objective of introducing children and young
people to sailing, and providing the opportunity
for them to pursue their sailing career at local,
regional and national level. HRCST forms the
first rung of the ladder, we introduce children
of Year 4 to 6 to the basics of sailing. Our
sailors begin in Optimists, where they develop
their boat handling skills. They progress into
the Taz to develop their seamanship and racing
skills in a double handed dinghy, then into the
Feva to focus on spinnaker and performance
sailing skills. At this point they are more than
ready to join a sailing club, and compete at
local level. We are currently involved in
setting up a Saturday Club with Stithians
Watersports Centre for year 7 sailors who have
    left HRCST.
