5IDB-survey on external causes
- Complementary to existing information sources
- Complementary even in the field of road transport
injuries (e.g. bicyclists, pedestrians) and
workplace accidents (e.g. comparability) - Unique source of information, for targeted
interventions (e.g. products, activities,
settings) and for monitoring the effect of
targeted interventions - Filling the gap of information about the most
vulnerable groups (e.g. injuries of children,
persons with disabilities, senior citizens) - Inexpensive due to sampling method

6Who needs IDB-like injury information?
7The Challenge
- 250.000 fatalities due to injury in EU27 every
year. - Fourth leading cause of death after
cardiovascular disease, cancer and respiratory
disease - Killer Number one in young ages
- Main cause of lifelong impairment
- About 10 Percent of all health costs
- Huge differences in injury risk demonstrate
preventability. - High savings in few years possible
