2Leaf Peeping at Sharpe!
Will we see green leaves?
Colorful leaves?
Or no leaves at all?
Sharpe Reservation is north of Oradell. The
autumnal equinox will have taken place, and we
will have changed the clocks to Eastern Standard
time. How do these things affect the leaves?
3Lets Start by Collecting Some Data!
Changes in our photoperiod (amount of sunlight),
temperature and weather will affect the leaves.
Track some of the changes already taking place by
visiting this website. Work with a partner to
fill in the data for at least three to four days.
See if you can identify a pattern and draw a
conclusion about the affects sunlight has on our
world and changes in the seasons.

5How Do the Leaves Change?
Do you remember the ingredients of photosynthesis?
SUNLIGHT
WATER
CARBON DIOXIDE
Combine with Chlorophyll to produce
Gluecose
Oxygen
6However, during the fall the tree reduces its
production of chlorophyll. It is preparing for a
state known as
Dormancy
Dormancy is similar to what animals do in the
winter.
It is like hibernation.
7So, where are we going?
We will be driving north on Route 17 to the New
York Thruway (87) and cross the Hudson River
using the Beacon Bridge. Finally, we will
continue north on Rt.9 to Fishkill, New York.
1. See the map in your packet. Trace over the
roads we will be driving with a yellow marker.
Label all the states and towns.
2. Using your map scale calculate how many miles
we will travel. Identify the latitude and
longitude of Oradell and Fishkill.
3. Calculate how long it will take if we drive at
60 mph. (distance X speed time)
8Cold Weather Comes down from Canada
Can you label the first areas that are affected
by seasonal changes in the weather?
The orange areas on the map are parks. We will
be near the tri-state area New York, New Jersey
and Connecticut.
Use the New York state map in your packet to
identify the numbers on the map. You may label
them by region, major city, lake or national park.
9What does this all mean?
The Autumnal Equinox shortens the days and with
it come cooler nights.
2. Last week in September first week of October
3. First two weeks in October
4. Second third week in October
5. Last two weeks in October
6. Last week in October first week in November

10Total It Up!
You need to consider all the information you have
gathered and ask yourself a few last questions.
- Did we have a dry late summer?
- Did we have sunny days and cool nights of about
40o Fahrenheit? - Was it a cloudy fall with warm nights?
- Or did we have an early frost?
Fill out the graphic organizer and make your
projection.

12Completed Task
Have you completed the following?
- Traced the route we will be following to get to
Sharpe Reservation and labeled the map with all
the towns, rivers and important information - Calculated the distance we will travel and the
approximate time it will take to get to Fishkill,
New York from Oradell, New Jersey - Answered the questions and completed the graphic
organizer - Identified the regions and plotted the progress
of the leaf peepers - Identified the latitude and longitude of Oradell
and Fishkill - Placed your final projection about the leaves in
the box.
Notice the weather, the leaves and what is
happening around you!

14Label Latitude Longitude
Can you find our Latitude Longitude in Oradell,
New Jersey and in Fishkill, New York?
The maps you will be using labels them as X and
Y. Remember to dribble then shoot! You may not
find the exact location of our towns, but come as
close as possible!
Go to your packet and identify the X and Y then
label the Latitude and Longitude for Oradell and
Fishkill.
