J.R.R. Tolkein Biography
  • J.R.R. Tolkein was born John Ronald Reuel Tolkein
    in South Africa in 1892. His father died of
    rheumatic fever while they lived in Africa. After
    his father died he, his mother, his brother
    left to return to England. Tolkein attended King
    Edward VI School. While living in England, his
    mother converted to Catholicism this impacted
    Tolkeins life dramatically.

  • The high priest, Father Francis Morgan would help
    Tolkein through some tough times. Tolkein lost
    his mother in 1902 to diabetes when he twelve
    years old. Father Morgan took him in then put
    him in a boarding school. Then at age sixteen he
    fell in love with Edith Bratt. Edith became an
    obsession of Tolkeins Father Morgan didnt
    approve of this.

  • Father Morgan always tried to separate them but
    only succeeded his second attempt by receiving a
    scholarship to Oxford. Tolkein studied a language
    of love. He was really captivated by Gothic
    mythology, Norse, Icelandic. Later on in life
    he even pulled some of his characters from his
    studies. Mirkwood Forest played a part in both
    The Hobbit The Lord of the Rings.

  • This forest came from Icelandic mythology. While
    he was attending college he reached maturity. He
    then looked up his love proposed. They married
    in 1916. In World War I Tolkein served as an
    officer in the front lines lost many friends.
    He caught trench fever while in war was sent
    back to England to recuperate.

  • He was so interested in language he developed his
    own based on Welch Finnish. While recuperating
    in England he began to combine mythology his
    languages. This would be part of his famous
    books. Not too long after he Edith had the
    first of their four children. After the war was
    over, he took the job of professor at the
    University of Leeds.

  • Not only did he lecture teach, he still worked
    on his mythology. He almost felt like he was the
    creator of English mythology. His book The
    Hobbit came out in 1936 would later be one of
    his most famous works. One night while he was
    grading papers he began the book. When he opened
    the exam booklet, he noticed that the first page
    was blank there he wrote In a hole in the
    ground there lived a hobbit.

  • Soon after that, The Hobbit became a best
    seller made Tolkein famous. He was also in a
    group called the Inklings. The main person in the
    group was C.S. Lewis who would later become
    Tolkeins best friend. In the 1930s, Tolkein
    began working on his series The Lord of the
    Rings.

  • This writing would go on for ten years. It became
    a huge success was sold published into three
    parts. After he retired from Oxford, Tolkein
    moved to Bournemouth with Edith in 1966. When
    Edith died in 1971, Tolkein didnt take it well.
    He went on while struggling for two more years.
    He died of Pneumonia on September 2, 1973.

A Summary of The Hobbit
  • When a respected hobbit named Bilbo Baggins is
    visited by Gandalf, he is given the chance to go
    on the adventure of a lifetime. When Bilbo
    invites Gandalf to a tea party the next day it
    seems that somehow thirteen dwarves were invited
    also. When Gandalf the dwarves ate, Bilbo then
    realizes that Gandalf told the dwarves that he
    was a burglar.

  • The thirteen dwarves then offer to help Gandalf
    Bilbo on their way to Lonely Mountain where they
    hope they can get back their treasure from Smaug
    the Dragon, who destructed their home under the
    mountain. At first Bilbo is a little bit hesitant
    about meeting Smaug, he then is challenged by
    hearing the dwarves dissing his courage skills.
    Bilbo then pushed himself into the adventure with
    courage.

  • Bilbo Baggins-a hobbit invited by Gandalf to go
    on the adventure to Lonely Mountain.
  • Gandalf-wizard, protector, teacher, mentor of
    Bilbo Baggins, director that leads dwarves to
    regain treasure from Smaug the dragon.

  • Thoron-leader of the dwarves, grandson of Thror
    descendent of Thrain the Old who was King under
    the Mountain when Smaug seized the treasure.
  • Balin, Dwalin, Bifur, Bofur, Bombur, Dori, Nori,
    Ori, Fili, Kili, Oin, Gloin-The other twelve
    dwarves who go with Thorin, Gandalf, and Bilbo on
    the long journey.

  • Goblins-Ugly, wicked creatures who live in a cave
    in the Misty Mountains. They capture Bilbo and
    the dwarves and eat their ponies.
  • Gollum-The slimy creature who guards the mouth of
    the cave. He is completely self-centered and
    talks to himself. He owns the ring of
    invisibility that Bilbo steals.

More Characters
  • Bert, Tom, and William Trolls from whom Bilbo
    takes the key to a cave from which he and the
    dwarves take gold and the swords they use in
    battle with the Goblins and in the Battle of Five
    Armies. The trolls are crude and violent and
    capture the dwarves in order to roast and eat
    them.
  • Elrond An elf the proprietor of the Last Homely
    House at the Edge of Wild and is a leader of the
    elves. He translates the runes on the swords
    taken from the trolls to reveal that they were
    originally used in the Goblin-wars and translates
    the moon-letters on Thorins map to reveal the
    importance of Durins Day.

  • Wargs-Wild wolves from whom Bilbo and the dwarves
    hide in trees after they escape from the Goblins.
    Gandalf sets the Wargs on fire and chases them
    away, but they return, joined by the Goblins, and
    try to set fire to the forest.
  • Lord of the Eagles-The chief eagle who rescues
    Bilbo, Gandalf, and the dwarves from the Wargs
    and flies them to his nest perched on the
    mountain.

Just A Few More
  • Beorn-Also called a skin-changer because of his
    power to change into a bear, which allows him to
    attack Goblins and Wargs. He is hospitable to
    Gandalf, Bilbo, and the dwarves on their way to
    the Lonely Mountain and gives them ponies and
    provisions for their journey. He appears at the
    Battle of Five Armies and fights the Goblins.
    Gandalf and Bilbo spend Yule-tide with him on
    their way back to the hobbit-lands.
  • Elvenking-King of the elves who imprisons Thorin
    and the other dwarves in his dungeon, from which
    they are rescued by Bilbo who hides the dwarves
    in barrels and floats them down a river to
    Lake-town (also called Esgaroth).

  • Master of Lake-Town-The ruler of Esgaroth, the
    town of men also called Lake-town, to which Bilbo
    and the dwarves escape from the palace of the
    Elvenking.
  • Smaug-The dragon who lives underground in the
    Lonely Mountain, where he keeps watch over the
    treasure hoard that rightfully belongs to Thorin.

  • Bard-The archer from Lake-town who kills Smaug
    the dragon and eventually becomes Master of
    Lake-town.
  • Dain-Cousin of Thorin with an army of dwarves,
    he comes to aid Thorins band in the Battle of
